What did you do in the garden today?

Not much gardening since we got back from vacation except moving plants around indoors and doing some watering. I do need to replant brussel sprouts. I think a squirrel has been enjoying the stays as a snack since I planted them outside. I'll need to put some wire around them. Any day now I'll get to planting more outside. Last frost should be later this month.
 
Good morning all. Moving slow today. I got a lot accomplished yesterday. I put some plastic on the garden bed that has weeds popping up and the pallet in the garage is ready to drag out for the potato garden. Today I plan on doing some pruning on one of my butterfly bushes in addition to baking some bread. My peppers haven't emerged yet, but I can see something that looks like sprouts starting to develop just at the edge of the soil line. I should start the butternut squash seeds soon, but they really prefer warm temps so no big rush. I'm glad you are making some progress on the house @karenerwin. I wouldn't be too concerned about the negative attitudes. Cities and towns are like living organisms, they are constantly changing due to economic factors and honestly, crime happens everywhere, even on the pristine shores of Cape Cod. It takes courageous people like yourself to move into a "depressed" area and work to make it a better community. Best of luck to you and your DH. OK @Sueby. I am so jealous of your plexiglas panels. I would make window frames for them and fit them over one of your raised beds. Just a thought. As for the current housing "bubble," this is being driven by very low interest rates. When home loans are cheaper due to low interest rates, the demand for property goes up. If there isn't a high volume of properties to meet the demand, prices go up. That doesn't mean the real value of the property goes up, banks will only finance the real value. That happened in 2017 when I sold my previous home. That house appraised for $5K less than the selling price so the buyer had to cover that with a larger down payment. And this is also what is different than the housing bubble/crisis of 2008. It took me a long time to find my current home with room for growing vegetables and raising chickens.
 
@Wee Farmer Sarah they are climbing up the strings to the blinds in that room, they are 2 feet tall already so I'm thinking pole but who knows! I think I'm just going to give them to the chickens, it's too early to put them out & I don't want them in the house anymore.

I am pretty excited about the plexiglass panels for sure, it just throws off my plans for the year. Next year I'll probably do frames, like you said, & plan to use them & get a great head start. Maybe even hinges! I'm going to use 1 for sure right now for the bush beans, I'm direct sowing them today.

I thought you weren't doing butternut squash this year? Or was that my imagination? LOL

You should know me by now @Sueby. Always changing my mind. LOL! I found the seeds for the smaller, bush type butternut squash so I've decided to plant them in the smaller bed where I had my Roma tomatoes last year. I'm only planting three plants so I shouldn't have as many to harvest. I still have one in my bedroom window and cooked squash in the freezer. The one in my window still looks good, no signs of rot. I'm planting Fordhook bush lima beans this year and since I'm planting corn (for chuckles) I'll be planting pole green beans with them. After that surprise hard frost last May, I'm taking a slower approach this year. I am concerned we might have another drought (actually the previous one never officially ended) but hopefully the temps will be closer to normal.

I was so very late in doing it, but I pruned the gooseberry & blueberry bushes yesterday. They're both young so they didn't need much. I had another habanero pop up yesterday, so that's 3 out of 20 or so. :gig

I need to get out there & see if I can make those plexiglass panels into some type of a cold frame & get something planted under there. I may go into town & buy some bush bean seeds because I really want them now. :smack

LOL. Ya I am too. 30 % Norwegian, but family left in 1623, it wasn't even Norway then..... So.... lol. I do speak some and LOVE photos so keep them coming.

Thunderstorm this morning and lost power for a bit. I have trailer load of mulch to pick up in town. Every joint in my body is screaming and I have no motivation to work. I have a million cherry tomatoes to re-pot today, which is a MUST, and need to get on to building the greenhouse shelves.

All I can think of now is a gassy squirrel.
