What did you do in the garden today?

Planted 12 asparagus roots and stratifying some wildflower seeds . Many wildflower seeds need a cool moist period to germinate . They overwinter on the ground in the wild .
I have some coming up by the house that i didn't see at all last year when I scattered some seeds in the bed.

I'm hoping to make some gardening progress this weekend. I am seeing some things coming back, so that's good. Can't believe it, but one of my younger hens/pullets (hatched in late June) is acting broody already. I bet she hasn't laid 10 eggs yet. I thought she was looking pale and dosed everybody with Corid just in case, but she's telling me that's not why. I guess I'll get her some Marans or Welsummer and olive egger eggs for more egg color variation. If she's serious......she really doesn't seem old enough to be a parent to me. My mom ram a home daycare, so I took my time :lau

Mixed up and applied some liquid fertilizer for the acid-loving plants (camellias, hydrangeas, blueberries) after the promised rain did not arrive today. I watched the clouds just scoot past overhead :rolleyes:. I would have watered my newer plants this morning had I known the rain would be a no-show. Oh well.

Oh, I also patched some gaps in my super-sophisticated method of extending the height of my chain link fence - I weave sticks through it so they stick up at the top every 6 inches or so and discourage the chickens from flying up there to roost. :lau A couple fell/broke in the last storm, so had to replace them. So far, its been the only GOOD use for privet I have found - the branches are flexible enough to weave into the chain link, but also stick up nice and tall.

Oh, I am also looking for a ground cover that can cover a VERY shaded slope. Preferably something that doesn't need mowing and is okay around chickens and dogs. My ideal would be something low that spreads well like creeping phlox, except a shade plant. Zone 7 with clay soil. Ideas appreciated!

I'm slowly managing to chip away at the long TO-DO list. I managed to plant the new Pink Lady apple tree and French plum today. They are planted on the edges of the duck pen so I went ahead and watered them in with the poopy, scummy water from their little pool while I was changing the water. I'm hoping that doesn't cause any problems. I figured it might be a step down from fertilizer... 😂

I also managed to get 4 tires filled with dirt but haven't planted seedlings in them yet. I will do that tomorrow before it rains hopefully... Supposed to have severe storms tomorrow night.

Weather should be really nice on Saturday. DH and I are taking the 4 wheeler into the National Forest to look for morels.... 🤞🙏🤞🙏

I've seen other people do the "tires filled with dirt" thing, but wasn't sure why...is it just an easy and affordable way to make a raised bed? Is it safe for food plants, or just for ornamentals?

Honestly, I see you guys laughing along with me. I met my husband when I was 17, refused to get married till I was out of college, and gave birth to my oldest at 30.

My youngest brother who considered the "babysitting kids" his good friends is now living in Graham, WA and he and his wife work for the University of Puget Sound. I'd love to
meet some of you locals in that area if i ever make it that way to meet my newest nephew.

@AmeliaBedelia - what about pachysandra?

Morning all. Toe is feeling better. Still can't do anything chicken wise because I can't put a shoe on & with the possible Lupus diagnosis I need to worry about infection. I put a slipper on & walked thru the garden yesterday though. Got the offending plexiglass panel in place over the bean seeds. The lettuce needs to be watered but I wasn't moving the other panel, I'm gun shy now. DH is going to have a lot of chores this weekend - chickens & garden! I ordered a pair of (don't laugh) crocs to garden in, no more flip flops for me. Lesson learned.

@AmeliaBedelia I agree with pachysandra suggestion. No mowing, fills in slopes, attractive. In grad school (on west coast) the university used this in a lot of places - very attractive. Made everything look colorful (green) and lush. Likes some to a lot of shade.
