What did you do in the garden today?

I went down to City Hall to complain about the storm drain. The guy in charge isn't there....go figure. They gave me his cell number. Bad idea! ha ha.... I've left 2 messages so far today. I can become a regular pest if they keep ignoring me. I will give him a week to call me back. If he doesn't, I'll get an attorney to send a letter.

I REALLY need to stop looking at seed sites. I just ordered more seeds....this time for flowers and some Richmond Green Apples (cukes). Has anyone ever grown these types of cukes before?

instead of calling the guy from city hall send him either e-mail or a registered letter. if he ignors it your attorney can sue him.

We moved photo day.
The sky is grey and heavy and the winds are HOWLING.

I have gardening to do, but after mowing all day yesterday, boy am I SORE! I might wander out there yet.

The fox has been passing through the barnyard for several nights in a row now. She must have kits stashed somewhere. Last night, she spent time around the henhouse and runs searching, and NOT for mice. UGH. Checking out the door, looking in windows, crawling under. She's HUNTING.

I always thought you were supposed to wait to plant your beans until your corn was around 9-12 inches tall? Otherwise your beans can outgrow the corn and you'll still have to end up staking them.
My corn is about a foot high- think I will go plant some beans around them.
I'm going to be adding new flower beds to my back yard which is sloped. I also have a dog who LOVES to dig so I have to be smart about putting up a barrier around the flower bed which can keep her out of it. I've been doing some research to get some ideas on what repurposed and/or free materials I can use to make the new flower beds. Came across this idea....repurposed garage door panels. Now that's a new one to me.....lol!

Getting back to this after everyone else answered, but...

I've had good luck with marigolds helping deter pest from tomatoes. I had trouble a couple years ago with soldier bugs, and the marigolds helped with that last year, a lot. Last year, I saw VERY few hornworms too. I don't know if it's because of the marigolds, but I'm planting a lot of marigolds around the perimeter of my garden.

Re: Butternut squash: I love that you get A LOT of squash in each one. If I have a bunch to process at one time, I don't feel bad at all just using the neck and then tossing the seed cavities to the chickens.

I plant marigolds in my garden because they smell strong and confuse many pests while still attract bees.

Super busy here. Garden is taking awhile...

Military kid home!!! :love:celebrate:D

The cold my youngest gave me 2 weeks ago really ran me down. I had to go the the doctor yesterday as I was concerned due to breathing issues. So, I have bronchitis and now have antibiotics and steroids to help me get better. So, hopefully am on the mend.

Garden work.. in progress planting, just taking longer due to kid arrival prep, and illness.

potatoes: mounded them 2 days ago, they are looking good!

I have no experience with 3 sisters but I have read a lot. they say to plant corn first. when it is at least 6+ in tall then to put 2 beans/corn. you planted to many.
There's more corn there than you realize. The corn is in clumps of 3 or 4. An interesting technique I read about for planting small quantities of corn is to plant a few kernels together just a few inches apart from each other. Yield is still good and they support each other like a clunk of bamboo would support each other.
