Went back out, now that the toddler is in bed and the day is chilling down. I filled one of those 13 gallon kitchen trash bags with yet more nightshade. Only got half a bag earlier by comparison. Looks like I've gotten all the stragglers, except one that's in a puddle and I can't reach it quite yet, and have started working on what I'm referring to as the "mother" patch.
Nasty plants. Hairy like nettle, poisonous if consumed or pulled by hand with cuts present, spread by seed and rhizome... probably be fighting for a long time. Oh and if it brushes up against you with those hairy leaves and stems, it burns like you got into a prickly patch of corn or squash or something. Lucky me, crushed basil takes the sting right out. That's why I grow basil next to my squash, too. That and for the pollinators.
The bright spot though! I looked them over thoroughly and not a one has set fruit yet. So I'll just be fighting the rhizomes and not seed.
And if I didn't have a toddler, I probably wouldn't bother with it beyond preventing spread. But... he doesn't know the difference between pretty flowers like jasmine and honeysuckle and deadly plants.
No more gardening for me today, lol. Time to chill.
