What did you do in the garden today?

Yes, post the soup recipe please @Wee Farmer Sarah - I think I will try it!

I made the cucumber sour cream salad last night, we both loved it & the sauce was good dipping for the chicken. That will be a new staple. I may make some cucumber bread too, it freezes well.

I made a strawberry rhubarb dump cake (low carb version, so made with almond & coconut flower) oh my was it good! Better cold the next day too. I wanted to use the rest of the rhubarb & strawberries but didn't want to do more jam. I double the recipe & froze some too, otherwise DH would eat it all in one day.

That sounds SO GOOD! I don't have any rhubarb though....

Well, I woke up this morning, watered the garden, fed the animals, and by the time I came back in....we have a baby! Two more have pipped. Another is zipping right now. The 3 eggs that I want to hatch the most (2 olive eggers and a Silverudd) still haven't pipped yet. If they end up being duds, I can already see myself reaching back out to the breeder and asking for more eggs. I don't know if she does requests exactly, but I'm going to ask for 3 hatching eggs each for Jubilee Orpingtons, Silverudds, Copper Marans, and Olive Eggers. I think all of those would make awesome additions to my flock. :D

Went out this morning to feed the chickens and get a picture of Helga's new chicks - there are only two, but she is taking great care of them. She fluffed herself up and tucked them under her when I went in to replenish their food and water, and pecked me when I tried to get close enough for a picture!

Here she is, hiding them under the ramp.

Good morning all. We got a little rain overnight but it's partly sunny now although the humidity is in the "icky" range. Did a quick walk through the back garden. I picked the first zucchini. It's only 5 inches long but there was another developing right above it so I picked it to give the other more space. I ordered a new sink and faucet to go with the new countertop. The sink will be here tomorrow, but I have no idea yet as to when the countertop will be installed. Apparently I didn't save the cucumber soup recipe to my electronic cookbook @littledog and @Sueby. It's likely in my pile of recipes on paper. My DD gave me the recipe years ago and it is really good and simple to make. When I have more time I will look for it and certainly post it again. I have two pressure canners, however I haven't needed to use it for anything other than water bath canning. It's just nice to know if I would need to pressure can something, I have the right equipment. I had been holding my breath on how my canner would fit on my new stove. I finally brought the 16 quart canner up from the basement and set it on the stove. It sits just fine on the burner like it really was designed for it. Now I can continue loving my new stove. No work planned in the garden today. Tomorrow DD and I are planning on doing the first supervised "free ranging" of the littles. DD is helping because these little darlings really love her, me, not so much. Have a great day.

I would love to have a pressure canner to be able to do things without acid! I'd like to do tomatoes without adding citrus acid or lemon juice. Or even do chicken soup! But I don't want one enough to bother - I have no room to store it since we don't have a basement here.

Mulch material, LOL, that's supposed to be lawn! In between the raised beds is actual wood chips for the walkways, but the surrounding area between the beds and the fence used to be grass. The rest of our field and lawn area around the house looks just like that, too. It should green up again when we get some rain, hopefully.

Yeah, that is what my front lawn looks like this year. We have had so little rain this year, that I have not mowed my lawn in weeks and weeks. Normally, this time of year, I'm out mowing my lawn twice a week just to keep up.

I don't have running water in my main garden, and it is suffering. I built some new raised beds in the backyard, close to the chicken coop and run, and water the beds manually every other day. Those watered beds are doing fantastic.

We got a shot of rain yesterday, and maybe some more today. So I hope things will green up. Like many people, we are fogged in by all the ash in the air from the fires out west. Smells like someone is having a campfire next door...
