What did you do in the garden today?

No gardening for me today. Ive had the same issue with squash, plant gets huge, takes up too much garden space, thinks about setting fruit, gets mildew and dies...We tried acorn squash this year bc wife loves it, one of the plants set 2 fruits but by the time they were about the size of a softball the plant died overnight.

In other news, I did walk out to check on the girls this afternoon and....we got our FIRST EGG! The last 18 months of starting to keep chickens has been such an adventure and I am so eggcited about this. On top of it all, she was a good girl and layed in the nesting box. I am assuming it is my Asian Black, she has been really loud lately and much redder in the face than the PBR. Shes huge and weve named her Big Sass bc she is a bit of a diva.

There are alternatives to summer squash . I only fry or add to cucumber salad . Lots of uses other than those so alternatives may not be for everyone . Armenian cucumber is good fried . Tatume squash is a small round one that the vine roots readily and survives borer damage . Ornamental gourds can be fried when small . There is a moschata called Trombocini I think . Long and good fried when small . The night blooming gourd can be fried when small . Sometimes called snake gourd as it is long . A late planting like about now can sometimes avoid borers . I raise a cross I made with ornamental gourd . The vines take over but some are not bothered by borers .

I dip any cucumbers in some salt and call it a day! 😂😂😂

We were in Poplar Bluff for 4 days. I picked 2 zucchini and about a dozen cherry tomatoes before we left. When we got home I had another 6 zucchini ready! I also got my first cucumber of the season and picked another 20 or so cherry tomatoes. Oh, and another jalapeño. One of my slicing tomatoes is finally starting to turn color!!
