I was such a bad girl today. Stopped by Atwoods to check on feed prices and picked up 2 baby polish chicks to give to my co-broody girls. My daughter loves the one we have. I'm trying to figure out color on one of them. Maybe gold laced?View attachment 2770198View attachment 2770199

There are alternatives to summer squash . I only fry or add to cucumber salad . Lots of uses other than those so alternatives may not be for everyone . Armenian cucumber is good fried . Tatume squash is a small round one that the vine roots readily and survives borer damage . Ornamental gourds can be fried when small . There is a moschata called Trombocini I think . Long and good fried when small . The night blooming gourd can be fried when small . Sometimes called snake gourd as it is long . A late planting like about now can sometimes avoid borers . I raise a cross I made with ornamental gourd . The vines take over but some are not bothered by borers .

I grow bush type squash (limited space) & they had VB last year but were large enough they survived it. & I just did plant a couple regular squash vines, hoping all the beetles & borers have settled in at the neighbors already.

I'll definitely save the little round gold ones, they aren't super easy to chop but they have a nice flavor. The giant ones didn't multiply this year, I got no more than 2 per planted bulb this year. That said, I will still plant some of them next season, it's hard to beat the giant shallots. And I keep finding more little round gold ones that I'd stuck in any open spot.

Mine didn't divide as much as I thought they would, but the ones that did I got maybe 2 or 3 bulbs from each. They just got HUGE! I have them curing now down at the shop so I haven't tasted them yet.

I want to make a bunch of cowboy candy and I only have a few assorted peppers so I caved in and bought a couple pounds of jalapenos. I'll add my assorted in with the jalapenos, some are sweets and some are hots so it'll make a nice mix.

I LOVE cowboy candy! We don't eat sugar here so I haven't made any in a few years, I miss it. Last year at my Christmas jam making party we made a jalapeno jam (but with mixed peppers instead) & it was delish! Have you tried anything like that? People loved it so I think we'll be making it again this year.

Morning all, it's my day off so I haven't even ventured outside yet. When I do get off my butt I'll go pick some cukes for soup (@Wee Farmer Sarah I'm just going to pick a random recipe off the net) & bread. I have some beans I need to pick for dinner, the beans are really starting to produce now! Getting regular sungolds too. I have a couple onions starting to lay over so they won't be long before I have to harvest.

My new squash are coming up well, as are the new beans. They need to hurry, having empty beds stresses me out, I feel naked LOL. I see the lettuce is popping up, I'm going to put the shade cloth over it this weekend & for it to not be too hot.

I think I'm holding on new chickens for now. I should be glad the snakes helped me keep hatch numbers low LOL. I would stay out of trouble completely if I didn't have broody hens. They make chicks so much easier! I was down to 4, the OG's, until last year when ordered the assorted rare breeds from Meyer. I have 16 of them. Now 11 babies. Some chickens may go to auction. We'll see.

Lucky for me the mommas accepted the babies. They are TINY compared to the ones that hatched Sunday. I'm leaving them in the kennel until the new babies know what having a mom means.

I've never grown anaheims but the ones I buy from the store are never hot, I roast them and put them on hamburgers. I want to make a bunch of cowboy candy and I only have a few assorted peppers so I caved in and bought a couple pounds of jalapenos. I'll add my assorted in with the jalapenos, some are sweets and some are hots so it'll make a nice mix.

What on earth is cowboy candy? I'm intrigued....

We've chopped up green Anaheim peppers and they taste just like regular green peppers. But I've been told if you let the Anaheim peppers turn red, they are far spicier. DH used some, along with jalapenos, to make the salsa and it was medium/hot spicy. of course, that could have been from the jalapenos.

I'm going to take a shot at some different hot sauces this weekend and see what happens. I have peppers coming out the ying yang. And we go through a LOT of hot sauce in this house....

I noticed that TS no longer uses their chick towers they had this spring, back to the bins. I had read about dead chicks, that must be why. But I'm thankful I think they're cute but that I have no motherly desires. I have 7 chickens now, & thats too many eggs as it is! I'll be complaining come winter when they stop laying though. Ha!

@TJAnonymous Cowboy candy is basically just candied jalapenos. Delish! Generally sliced fresh jalapenos, lots of sugar, a little vinegar & tumeric boiled together. They are the bomb on burgers.

Today in the garden… I am going to be mixing some compost in with the potato dirt I dumped yesterday. I need to find the drill bits, and add holes to two buckets, then fill them back up with refreshed dirt. I can’t explain it, but growing potatoes is fun. Maybe it’s because it’s more like washing a load of towels (does anyone get excited about towels?) than my favorite shirt (the shirt would be anything else in the garden that I actually love). A failed harvest would not bother me, but a good harvest is exciting to see.
If I’m not making sense, I blame the fact that I’m under caffeinated!

Smoke is ridiculous for having no fires near us. I'm still coughing form morning walk. Heading for feeling like well over 100 for the next week again. Insane.

Hens didn't make it outside yesterday, so they will today. I have to give the june bug population a chance to forget what a chicken is. But to make up for it, I gave them a gallon of cherry tomatoes to play with.

Not much more than turning on the auto irrigation in the garden and walking away.

I'll be inside for the rest of the day.

Potatoes are satisfying!! Also, a surprise as to how much one gets when you get to dig them up.

Good morning gardeners. Running behind this morning. I spent more time on my garden walk when I stopped to clean some weeds and grass out of two of my beds to carve out space for more planting. I have room for three heads of cabbage and more room for carrots. I picked a couple of handful of green beans, one zucchini and three tiny yellow squash that didn't get pollinated. I have a total of 7 lima bean plants and half of them are loaded with flower buds so I may actually get a serving or two out of them. The tomato plants are looking better since it stopped raining. The cucumbers are still iffy, but it looks like I may get a real cuke in a few days, Yay! The weather is really nice right now. The smoke from the fires out west has cleared out for now. However, the fires are still burning so I'm sure the smoke will come this way again. DD helped with letting the littles out of their pen yesterday. They were a little frightened and only lasted about 10 minutes. I'll wait a day before their second venture. My neighbors who have free ranged their chickens to death are away on vacation right now. Their house sitter let the chickens out to free range and I'm pretty sure they haven't come back. The rooster came back after 36 hours, but I haven't heard the egg song from there since Monday morning. I usually hear them. But it's been very quiet over there. Let me know how the cucumber soup turns out @Sueby. I don't make hot sauce because I usually just freeze my peppers and use them to spice up a dish. Also, I realized I got my peppers mixed up and what I was thinking of when I compared Anaheim peppers to jalapenos, I really meant Serrano peppers. Sorry for all the grief. I don't buy many peppers because I usually grow enough to last me all year. I still have some poblanos in the freezer from last year. I haven't had much luck drying them so I do buy Anchos for making chili. Have a great day all!

I haven’t stopped by in a while since it’s been so busy around here. I still have a few things producing in the garden despite the neglect. Mainly the winter squash, pumpkins and peppers. The strawberries seem to thrive on neglect though I can’t see the ground where the paths were anymore! I had 4 ft paths between these rows! These are first year plants!
