What did you do in the garden today?

My Spicy Pickled Beans recipe from Martha Stewart was a flop. Nobody in my family likes them. In short, they taste too much like vinegar. The spicy part is good and I like the crispy beans. But, I too, find these pickled beans much too strong in the vinegar taste.

Shout out to anyone who has pickled fresh garden beans that might be able to offer a better recipe for refrigerator - no pressure canning - beans.

:idunno Here is the Martha Stewart recipe I made and that nobody in my family likes....

OK so what do squash farmers do?! I promise they aren't out there flipping leaves every morning. Pesticides don't work on the adults at all. The only thing I have found in my ancient farming books is that they plant them later in the spring than other blooming thing. But it doesn't define it, and doesn't say WHY.
It mentions NOT using mulches, and planting bare earth, and also mentions leaving shingles or boards as a shelter near the plants and then crushing the boards first thing in the morning. I guess the bugs sleep under them?

I'll ask the guy up the road that has 4 acres of squash and pumpkin how on earth he manages every year. I do know it's just dirt, nothing else.
I've read the same thing but it didn't work for me. I planted my spaghetti squash and my pumpkins in late May. My zucchini and yellow squash were planted in early April inside my hoop house with a plant or two as a trap crop further away. Squash bugs have still gotten them ALL....regardless of when or where they were planted.

ETA - I used boards and roofing shingles around my zucchini last year. Didn't work. There was never any squash bugs under them. Only worms. Squash bugs were more interested in nesting in and around my plants.

Thought of a bit of obscura while walking today. My mom used the old panels from her steel garage door when then had a new one installed, and turned them into raised beds.

Now while you may not be getting new doors, what about asking a local garage door install company if you can have the ones they take back from a job? All they can say is No.

I'll be saving mine when I have new doors put in, whenever that is.

What did you do in your garden today?

I picked a bunch of Rattlesnake green beans and Cherokee wax beans, a few tomatoes, three eggplants, some broccoli shoots, and jalapenos. Pretty happy with today's harvest!

I checked hail damage on my giant pumpkins! Edit..why do the pics post upside down? I’m not doing anything different when it happens..

Fits perfectly with my lifestyle..I’m incapable of throwing anything away! My home is a class four hoarding situation..(I’m making up an imaginary Hoarding Scale where 4 doesn’t really mean anything!…)

Hey all. Just got settled from a weekend away, heading out for another one tomorrow, but this weekend is a girls only one & I can't wait. That means DH is in charge of the dog, the chickens and the garden. That's scary. :gig

Don't have time to catch up, hope everyone's gardens are good & producing well. I have cukes coming out my ears, I have brandywines & sungolds to pick, lots of green(purple)beans, I need to haul in the onions & I ate all the blueberries. 😝 The black eyed susans are taking over the yard & I have dahlias blooming - it looks beautiful around here.

Catch you all next week.
