What did you do in the garden today?

After canning for the first time on my new stove I can honestly say I'm so glad I got rid of the glass top monstrosity. The 16 quart canner heated up much faster and maintained the boil steadily. My huge exhaust hood was pretty amazing too as it sucked all the steam and heat up and out of the kitchen.

I fell way behind on messages so I probably missed when you posted about your stove, (or forgot, old lady brain here) but I'm very curious about your new stove. We're discussing getting rid of our hated glass top and switching to an induction stove. What did you get?

Hi Sueby. Hope all is well in your garden. I do ask for pics, too much? People can grow a different variety of things I can’t so it’s fun to see what you all are doing!
We’ve had some storms, actually got some rain, and things are doing great. The xeriscape area is in full bloom and hopefully the two Arabian lilacs I added will make it.

It's so good to hear from you @igorsMistress! And I beg for pics all the time too so you can't ask too much. And please, pics!

I made shakshuka for late lunch today with our home made tomato sauce, our fresh tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos, and fresh laid eggs. It was so delicious!

We met a rescue dog named Penny today. She's had a very difficult life so far and we're going to learn from her and help her learn from us. She's fearful and needs patience and calm support and we're going to give that to her. We'll visit her a couple more times to let her get used to us then we'll bring her home. Can't wait!

Might be adopting this cat tomorrow. He’s about a year, just got fixed today. Was part of a hoard of cats voluntarily given up, and all of them look pretty good for only being at the shelter for about 10 days -I don’t think they were in bad shape, I think the person could no longer keep up.

Colombian Wyandotte. They are almost 3 months old.

I was curious because I had a chick who looks identical to that only with slightly dingy feathers. She was the offspring between my white Easter Egger rooster (sold to me as an Ameraucana) and a Buff Orpington hen. I always assumed my EE Roo was some kind of Leghorn mix but my girl was the spitting image of your girls except she had ear muffs. Unfortunately she is the chicken who died this past Sunday when she got stuck in the net covering my run.

Do you ever feel cursed sometimes?

I have a BA broody who hatched out a single yellow chick about 3 or 4 days ago. She has had the baby out and about for the past 2 days. Then a 2nd BA broody also hatched out a single black chick. The 2nd broody brought her chick outside for the first time yesterday. Both broodies seemed to hang around each other (they were raised together) and were collectively raising their 2 chicks together. Then this morning I noticed one broody was picking on the yellow chick a little bit. I observed for a few minutes and she seemed to stop. I thought it was a fluke. Nope.... Tonight I went out to the run and both broodies were co-parenting only the black chick. After a 10 minute search, I found the yellow chick laying on the ground outside the run. It was still alive. I brought it inside and put it on a heating pad. I mixed up some Nutri-Drench and went on a mad dash to find the two brand new eye droppers I JUST bought. They are completely MIA. Sucked into a black hole with missing socks, Tupperware bowls, and silverware.... So I made a mad dash to the grocery store a quarter mile from my house where I bought the others. Only their pharmacy CLOSED 30 minutes earlier and they only sell eye droppers from the pharmacy. Went to Walmart and Dollar General. Nada. They don't sell them. By this point, I'm feeling like the deck is stacked against me. Fate does not want this chick to live.... So I drive back home and, sure enough, chick is dead......

Citrus is grafted. If that shoot is from the rootstock it won't give you Meyers. It might give you normal lemons, depending on which rootstock was used. Can you post a photo?

How cold does it get exactly? Citrus can survive temps in the 20s.

I missed this post earlier. I will take a picture tomorrow in the daylight. Winters here are typically pretty mild. Most daytime temps are in the upper 30s or lower 40s. Night time temps can hover between 30 - 35 degrees on average. However there's ALWAYS a cold spell where temps will drop into the teens or even single digits at night. I can usually count on one hand how many times this happens in a season. It is limited and rare but it DOES happen at least a few times each winter.

ETA - here is the tree in question in the dark. I have a streetlight over it but I will get a better picture tomorrow.

My mom has taken in a few rescue dogs. When her last dog passed away from cancer, she went to a rescue and specified that she wanted two dogs AND was willing to take hard-to-adopt, special needs dogs. She got what she asked for.... A sweet, elderly black lab that is allergic to everything under the sun. And a whippet who was so attached the lab that he could not be separated from her. They are the two most spoiled dogs I've ever seen....and they certainly now have a FOREVER home. My mom treats those dogs better than her family.

Those leaves could be Meyer or lemon rootstock. A photo of the base of the shoot will help, but if it's coming out of the ground it won't be Meyer. I have a rootstock lemon that produces perfectly good sour lemons, though I know that's not what you wanted

Since it's small I'd bring it inside during the cold spells.

I'll get a good picture in the morning. I wouldn't care at all if they were sour lemons. I just wanted lemons. I picked a Meyer because they are typically good for containers. I was always under the impression that a standard rootstock lemon would need to be planted in the ground?

I was too tired to water my garden and went to sleep. around 1 am I heard noise from the coop. I went there and found a little pekin cockerel with beheaded by a rat (who ate 2 muscovie ducklings a few nights ago). he ate baits as well and I hope he will die soon. I just don't know how many of them there are.
