What did you do in the garden today?

HOT today. A short rainstorm moved through this evening.

I’m going to plant some mustard and beets and turnips tomorrow. That should be the last of the fall planting.

the wall where the yellow jackets resided has been removed on the outside… all those pretty cedar shakes broken (thanks ring shank nails). But, new insulation installed, new exterior wall boardThis weekend, new cedar goes up on the wall (hopefully).

Gotta get ready for baby meat chicks that I’ll pick up next week. Need to figure that out as the rabbits are in the location they need by the time they turn 3 weeks old.

Purple potatoes! They turned out well and cook up nicely too. Taste is like a regular potato, texture seems more like a Yukon gold (rather than a white potato). They leave behind a small amount of color after being washed or cut, but very little (as compared to something like a beet).

I checked out the pumpkins. They aren’t done yet. Another one was eaten by… something. I can’t remember if I saw that one earlier or not.
Do pumpkins ripen off the vine? I can't remember.... I got 3 small pumpkins out of my 2 plants before the squash bugs killed them. I gave one to my mother. I have the other 2 sitting in my house at the moment. Both have turned orange so I assumed they were ripe? I haven't decided if I'm going to use them to make pies at Thanksgiving or just can them.

Morning all.

Stupid hot & humid again today. I picked a bunch of peppers, a cuke & a squash yesterday. I'm going to try & get some more lettuce in the bed where the onions were. The onions are almost all cured, can't wait to get them out of my spare room! LOL I'm now addicted to slicing the shallots thin & frying them. So good on a salad!

My broken chicken was doing a little better yesterday, she was standing on it & when I went out this am she's worse, she won't even stand up now. I got more aspirin in her in a scrambled egg, hopefully that helps. I have her in front of the fan, it's so hot & she just pants. She's eating, drinking & pooping good tho.

The deer finished off the bean plants. Crap. The deer ate the leaves off the butternut squash plants. Crap. This may be the year I get zero b-nut squash, a first for me, as it has always been my no-fail, dependable crop.

As soon as the self-seeded borage dies back (the bees love it,) I can start cleaning up the garden. Then I can work on improving the soil with lots of mulch. It'll be an early clean up, but I can get more done without having to get it all done in a week. I can also do it a section at a time, which will make it a less daunting task.

Today will be nothing....nothing....nothing. We are expected to get 3-5 inches of rain over the next two days so it will be a whole lot of mud stomping early next week :) I HAD shelling beans drying in the gardens but they will not be dry anymore. I am to the end of the garden here...just have a few peppers (jalapeno, banana and chile) still ripening, popping corn, come birdhouse gourds and shelling beans. Overall was a good year.

I ran out before a rain storm to pick dry shelling beans. Hate it when the dry ones get wet again!

I’ve got birdhouse gourds too! They are fun to grow, and in our garden, they provide shade for the south side if the chicken run.

My youngest LOVES to dry them out and paint them and then she puts them in her fairy garden every year (well for the past 3 anyway)
