What did you do in the garden today?

I look out into the yard and just see work that needs to be done...
We are not ready for winter, yet it's here. I have to work on the old car to sell it (tracing down brake leaks and need to change window actuator) and the new-to-me pickup (flush/change fluids and oil and replace a bad wheel speed sensor, and eventually get new tires and tire sensors plus alignment). How do I find time to get into the back yard and clean up the patio, put all the kids' outdoor toys away, clean out the shed, pull the last of the garden things, and finish winterizing garden beds,? Plus I STILL need to plant garlic and egyptian walking onions.
Feeling overwhelmed!

I feel you. I told DH how exhausted I was. I do everything here. If something needs done, it's on me. Although he is my master poo shoveler. LOL.

put the kids toys away? HAH,, you funny. In my days, you were told once, put the toys away, if you didn't and mom / dad had to, they went into the trash, if you cried, that was a whoopin, because you were TOLD, and you already KNEW the outcome...

Tell the kids to put the toys away, and as punishment for having to be told, make THEM pull the last weeds, put the last mulch down, etc etc.

I brought you little *%$# into the world and I sure as hell can take you OUT of this world if you don't start helping out around here you ingrateful little....... although you may not think exactly that... they don't need to know that up front, and it's a good motivator to get them to work !!

If we didn’t pick up/ put away our things my mom would take them and we had to pay a nickel to get each item back. Even if it was school work that was due the next day.

My mom would dump our entire room and closet into one massive pile and we were grounded, except for meals, until it was all put away neatly and properly.

I think I blocked out whatever it was my mom did. I honestly have no idea...

Watered my sprouts and thinned the radish. I let dh eat the radish sprouts, which he immensely enjoyed. Said they tasted peppery.

I've got an order in with baker creek that shipped today. Cold weather crops that all claim to be frost hardy. Leeks, onions, rutabaga, cabbage, etc. We have such buggy summers here I'm thinking my best shot at growing cabbage is over the winter. So I picked out what claims to be a good storage variety. I want to attempt making my own sauerkraut.

On the topic of the kids' toys. I should elaborate that they are made to clean up after themselves. However, I need to bring certain things into the garage, basement or shed before winter to store them. In speaking about power wheels, the swings on the swingset, a metal sit-on excavator toy, and a large tote of outdoor toys (used as a toy chest where they are made to put things away). With the kids being 2 and 5 years old, I take on the duty of packing up for the season as they cannot lift and dismantle these items.

@NewBoots - did you ever end up freezing any garlic in any way? I never remember I have the frozen garlic butter in there. Plus it's sooo hard it's a pain to get it out. Just curious if you figured anything out. Maybe next time I will freeze it in tablespoon fulls - that would have been much easier.

Never did, I have an open shallow bin and every so often I cut down more from the ones hanging in the garage/barn. I trim them and add them to the open bin. Got to get busy and plant some again soon but then again I need to finish clearing and prepping the beds.

Another edit, apparently we are going back into the 50s and 60s the rest of the week. Mother Nature is having hot flashes again...

Given her age it isn't surprising.

Tilled all the old, dead plants under. Made sure all was nice and level and planted some wheat. That spot is becoming normal yard again. The garden is moving to a new place on the new property we purchased next to us. The wheat should hold the dirt this winter as the rains come… hopefully.

I think I'm going to plant mine next to the Jerusalem artichokes and let that be just go wild with those two spreading plants.
