What did you do in the garden today?

First foray into the garden this fall. They were so happy! We still have mustard green, and brussel sprouts growing. In another area we have Rutabega and turnips still looking good. We expect to pick all these in the next week as temps will likely drop at night, into hard freeze temps.

Notice Tom Turkey and Jenny Turkey in the pen behind the chickens. They will get butchered just before Thanksgiving!. They are Bourbon Red Turkeys.

This reminds me I need to put in a gate for the ducks to access the garden. My chickens have been known to get over the six foot fence around the yard so I have to watch them if they are out of their run. The ducks don't fly though and are willing to eat sluds and snails that the chickens don't mess with.

Scalped all the mums. Must remember to go out and salvage some seed.

my chickens eat slugs and snails. slugs here are small size, up to 1 in.

I caught and broke a few snails to teach chickens to eat them. when I add new chickens the old ones teach them that snails are snack.

My only concern would be, as they went after the snails, they'd destroy the rest of the garden too, getting to them. I also have slugs I wish they'd eat.

My chickens won't touch them either & with this wet summer we had they are everywhere. But they don't even eat worms.

Morning all. Nothing happening around here. I made french onion soup from the last of my onions last night, it's sad that it's only Nov & I have to buy onions now.

I wish my chickens would not eat worms. They found some ONCE, by the compost bins and now every time I look they are over there digging to china.... I need to teach them to like gold nuggets and teach them to dig those up. Id not mind cleaning poop then!

Same thing I did and they love them. They love them even more now since they don't get to free range. Anything I toss into the expanded run is gone immediately.

expected rain from sunday for a few days. I hope this will come true this time. we desperately need it.
