What did you do in the garden today?

Ooooooooh, such an awesome project! Be sure to take lots of pictures before and while the work is being done. we moved onto an empty 1/3 of an acre lot and I love looking at the work in process pictures.
I will definitely be cataloging this transformation! I suppose I could create a thread on here so people can follow along with the journey over the next few years.

Picked up, unloaded and hooked up a new toy for playing in the dirt in preparation for a boat-load of Spring planting.

My Nana is, and my Papa was, full of old tidbits like this. They used to swear by planting and harvesting by certain signs and stages of the moon or the zodiak. They once related the story of a rancher that castrated some calves under the wrong sign and they all bled out. I used to think it was all a bunk of hokey... But as I age I begin to look at it different. I wouldn't necessarily say the stars have influence, but I might say that particular time of the year that is historically associated with a certain sign or whatnot, may be governed by different conditions than the rest of the year due to things as yet unknown.

Anyway, lol, watered the garden, it's dreary out. I'm hiding in the house and we have company. Will post a cool photo later of a cutting board DH made by hand.

pruning must be done around the full moon when water is in the roots. there certainly are a lot of things connected to the nature.

What did I do the garden today? Nothing, My garden beds are under about 2 feet of snow. But, I did post a few comments about my chicken run composting system and have been using shredded paper as coop litter this winter - hoping that will make faster composting when I dump the shredded paper coop litter into the run this spring. Nice to think about my spring garden plans even though I am still months away from being able to actually do anything.

We lost our dog Lily today. Here's the beautiful girl:

She was 13 YO and finding it hard to get around, falling down a lot and needing more and more help to get up, plus having more focal seizures even after increasing her medication. So we knew this time was coming sometime soon, but today she had a major seizure and it was the right time.
Her last week was really happy. She got to spend time with her former family over Christmas week - longer than we intended, family members met up at a local Air B&B and we got snowed in for several extra days - stressful for us, but the pets loved it! Lily loved playing on the beach in the snow with my niece's dog, and laying in front of the fireplace with my nephew's cat.
It seems really empty without her, and Pumpkin the kitty misses her too. Lily was the most loving and affectionate dog I've ever met. She was an angel who came into our lives right after we lost our two dogs last year.

I just heard that Betty White passed away today, too. Such a lovely and talented lady, and a huge animal lover. If there is an afterlife, Lily and Betty are the perfect partners to go there together.

Happy New Year gardeners. I’m so sorry for your loss @littledog. I may be picking up a small dog in need of a new home today. Will keep you all posted. Nothing planned for the garden today. Still need to get the apples out of storage in the basement and turn them into applesauce. Wishing you all a much better year ahead.
