What did you do in the garden today?

I hope the class you are going to is amazing !! Hope the fur baby gets fixed right up for not too much $$
Thanks Karen. Abby is doing ok, she’s without a nail on her dewclaw on one paw but is resting. She got something for pain and has some pills too, plus an antibiotic. Since we have an appointment for her allergy shot next Friday we’ll throw in a checkup too.

The class was very informative! It covered some basics and some more advanced stuff. The teacher is their lead grower there and covered both in ground and raised beds, how she gardens without disturbing the soil, they’re no till. She showed us how she plants tomatoes, learned a lot about tomatoes, explained determinant vs non determinant. The thing that amazes me is that they grow almost everything that’s seasonal under shade. I want to add another shaded garden!

We got a few starts and some worm castings included with the class fee

I also got a calendar created by a lady that was a guest speaker at their place today, I wasn’t part of that but the calendar is specific to my area so it’ll come in handy I think. Plus the gal has a blog and whatever else, I haven’t been to her website before

I have to figure out where I’m going to put these starts and I got some more worms to put in the garden.

Little corn starch on the nail will stop the bleeding
Yes’m but it quit bleeding by the time we got home. The nail was still partially attached and we couldn’t get it off ourselves without causing her pain, or maybe making it worse since she wasn’t cooperating. I’d rather she be comfortable and eat bean burritos than have her uncomfortable and eat steak.

I get clean cardboard, give it to the cockatoo, he shreds it, I gather it up and throw it into the composter, Ill throw a 5 lb bucket of chicken poop in there, a few cardboard panels of cockatoo poo in there, add wood mulch, a bit of grass, but tend to go heavy on the cardboard. and mulch, layering it. i'll then close the drain on the tote, and let it fill with rain, once the stuff is under water for about a week, I know it's good and active. I'll drain the water off to use as tea, and then let it do it's normal thing. In a few months ill rotate it, and again, and by the end of the 6th month, the wood chips are pretty well engaged, the cardboard is very engaged, and the chicken poop has simmered out a bit. I'll then throw worms in this and throw 4 or 5 burlap bags over it and cover it with large sheets of cardboard and leave it until next spring. When I puill the remains of the burlap sacks and cardboard off the next spring, this thing is just roiling with worms, mostly all processed, and ready to go. I'll fill 5 or 6 - 5 gallon buckets with the worms /dirt /castings and sell them for 20 - 25 each. The rest gets distributed thru some existing but mostly new totes of goodies I am planting. Refill and redo.

Although it composts very well, another major purpose of the Burlap is to keep the girls out. You put a layer or two of burlap down they can't dig it. Otherwise if they seen worms in that, they'd be half dug to China by the end of the day !

I have got a pretty much endless supply of clean cardboard, so am just looking for ways to better process it for end uses as mulch really.

No outside work today, too soggy. I’m hoping to get plastic over a couple of the raised beds this coming week. I have daffodils coming up in the front and backyard. Also looks like a tulip breaking through in the front garden. The forsythia looks like it’s budding up. I’m concerned because the long range forecast shows a hard freeze a week from Monday. My leeks are sprouting and the SM tomatoes are germinating. I started more tomato seeds - Better Boy and cherry, okra, bell peppers and tarragon just now. I’m still stressing over finding affordable dirt for my grow bags. I may do a partial raised bed to cut the cost. The world is really crazy when you have to worry about the price of dirt. :lau:lau

I had planned on making a temp cold frame this afternoon, get some broccoli and flower seeds started outside. I have a couple pieces of clear plastic roofing and a bunch of cinder blocks and old hay bales. Just big enough for 3 trays.

Instead I step on a nail while building a brooder, and then the 1st real thunderstorm of the year rolled through. .
Calling it quits today, will see how tomorrow fairs.
