What did you do in the garden today?

One rabbit got a lead pill this morning. We’ve been keeping an eye out for the last week bc he/she likes our garden a little too much.

Great day, not too hot and breezy.

Plan to plant a few things today. Squash (the ones we planted earlier from the store) aren’t looking very happy. I’ll remove those and restart with direct seeding. Leeks…although wonder if I should hold off a little longer. Melons, I picked out a few, most are new to us. Pumpkin. The package says this variety takes a looong time…so, I guess plant now and use insect netting against SVB.

THANK YOU for the suggestion.... 😂 I don't know WHY I was brain dead on this topic earlier. I was worried about my cukes getting hit by SVB but wasn't sure how I should protect them because they are in a raised tire bed so I can grow them along my fence.

This morning I saw a spot on them that suspiciously looks like SVB larva hole. I sprayed it with BT.

But Duh.... They are still small enough to cover with netting until they get to the fence. Then it might be a little tougher to cover them effectively.

Sorry @TJAnonymous, I didn’t mean to upset you or anyone else. 😞 I only did it because he was a menace and serious threat.
Oh, I don't blame you at all. We'd have done the same thing. It's just sad because a living thing has to eat so you can't really blame him/her. It's just sad... My DH thinks I'm crazy but I insisted we rehome a baby possum we caught in our barn to a state park that was 6 miles away. At least it gave the little bugger a fighting chance.

I do understand and don't judge, but it's just sad to me.

It took 8-9 shots to take him out... The .177 pellets didn’t seem to do anything to him so the last shot was with a .22
Pellets need to be placed perfectly to actually take something down. Headshot, and close. When in doubt go for higher fire power. It needs to be done quickly and cleanly with minimal trauma.

Any bird watchers here (besides chickens... 😂)? This little fella came up to my bird feeder yesterday. It's really small like a finch but a solid blue-black color. Never seen anything like it before.

Just not for us....even though we country folks. Last time my DH tried to put our blind cat outta its misery...it got out of the house and went into the backyard with our rottie...she didn't shred it like I would have thought. Her jaws broke his back hips...I tried saving him but I got health problems and rottie kept jumping and our old Bassett kept grabbing at his tail so after I fell a few times I thought I'd try pitching him up onto the deck where there was a gate to protect him...I missed and they got him again.
We live in a subdivision and I know people were home but not doing a thing but prob laughing n recording. Anyways I hollered for help and still noone...called DH and he said go get a bucket and stick him under it...that did better so I could think and he could get home to help.
He didn't wanna pay a vet bill so he dug a hole and laid the poor blind cat in it to shoot him...then my DH closes his eyes and turns his head as he pulls the trigger!
Cat goes "meow"
That poor cat had the worst day and I'm sure wish he had NO LIVES left! Then DH did it again!
Cat goes "meow" again!
I opened door and hollered I'm takin him to the vet stop torturing him worse!
Ugh...laughable now but traumatic for quite some time!

I understand and feel the same way about cottontail rabbits. Yes, I know they get into the garden and cause damage to plants but at least they don’t want to kill or eat my flock…This raccoon was killing rabbits and squirrels, dragging them under a trailer to stash/eat them, and fishing in my garden pond tanks before it broke into chicken coop and killed one of my birds. He literally was a monster and he deserves no remorse. At all.
