The directions say to replace the bulbs every 4 months,

Wow. I wonder if there is some way to test them. Seems really wasteful to just toss them on a schedule like that. I have to believe they last a lot longer than 4 months if you only have them on a couple of hours in the morning and evening when you are outside.

DH came back from the village barber and she lost her WHOLE garden and their soy and corn crops are demolished.
I took her all the tomato plants I had sitting on the top of the compost pile. They were crooked from having been laying down, but still strong and perky.
She was in tears from the gift.
I told her the varieties were unknown, but she didn't care.
We need to start a facebook page out here for extra plants and those that lost everything. Too late to start from seed and the stuff at big box looks horrible and is $$$$$$.

Oh, man, I am SO sorry! Thank you for helping her as you did.

We did get a "good rain" last night. Some more moved in and it rained for 3 hours or more. I haven't looked at the rain gauge (a bucket) yet, but I think we got half an inch or more. A nice soaking.

DH "rescued" some 10' sign posts from work a couple months ago. They were headed of the dumpster, so he brought them home. They're for the fencing project, so they're out by the garden, hiding in the tall grass. I need to find them and then string trim the grass. The garden is going to get bigger, so the clear area around it has to get bigger too.

Has anyone put a no-dig apron around their garden? I plan to cut some scrap metal roofing pieces into 1 foot strips to put under the fence. I don't have nearly enough to go around the garden, but it'll be a start. I can add more as we get more pieces. I've let DH know to be on the lookout for that kind of "trash" at work too.

What are you trying to keep from digging into the garden? Though it would cost some money as opposed to the roofing metal you don't have enough of I would think rolls of 2' poultry wire would be a lot easier to bury and run up the side of the fence so there is no gap. The grass will grow up through it and make it invisible.

Found this lovely in the garden yesterday.

I have NEVER had my tomatoes flower this soon after transplanting! Not from seeds I started myself. This variety is a paste called Nova. Need to grab a picture of my Federles, large sausage paste. They are curling oddly, not sure why.

Good morning all. We got nearly an inch of rain just this morning. We're in a lull right now. I got most of my flowers potted up yesterday and pruned the impatiens. I covered the potato plants on Saturday with old hay and today they have already grown an additional 6 inches. Some of them are starting to bloom also. I'm wondering if I just fill in the rest of the bed with straw they would produce more potatoes. The first planting of kale is growing really well as are the chard, lettuces and endive. I may toss some Epsom Salts on some of the raised beds before the rain starts up again later. My roses have started blooming and my daylilies look like they will be blooming soon. I'm considering buying a vacuum sealer. Opinions? Is it really worth the cost? I like zip lock bags because you can open and take a small portion of the frozen food.

My understanding of the vacuum sealer is that you can freeze smaller portions, but I don't have one, so take that with a grain of salt, lol.

What did you do in your garden today?

I picked a bunch of Rattlesnake green beans and Cherokee wax beans, a few tomatoes, three eggplants, some broccoli shoots, and jalapenos. Pretty happy with today's harvest!

I chased chicks out of there and harvested some spinach for them. Waiting for the ants to get bored so I can check on the okra

This morning I've been tackling damage from the storm yesterday. Stood the corn back up. Glad I planted them too close together now because the ones damaged the worst have a little support. I also stood the potatoes back up. The zucchini is another matter. It's all flipped over and I can't seem to flip it back and get it to sit straight. Hoping it will be fine laying on its side...

I harvested onions and garlic today. Onions are small. Bummer... But the garlic surprised me. It's still less than what I should have had but I'm happy with what I got. Also, see the one with all the bulbs bunched together? What's up with that?

Cukes seem to be recovering from their blight. I have tentatively uncovered them. Hoping the SVB doesn't find a way to kill them.

The gold raspberries are fruiting. I'm not happy with them. This is their 2nd year so I'll give them 1 more year to improve... But the fruit is small and the berry disintegrates when you pull it off. Not impressed... The only issue is that I have 2 varieties of gold raspberry and I'm not sure which one this is... Oh well, I'll pull it all out regardless if it doesn't improve.
