What did you do in the garden today?

Hey! Where are you in western Montana? I'm in Helena and yes the weather has been crazy lately. I moved from Ohio 5 years ago and it is so weird to me to be just now planting!! But this is our third year with a garden so hopefully we do better every year. I'm really bad at it!
It’s a process. Spring is fairly capricious and it’s always a challenge trying to put things into the ground and deal with the weather. Late freezes, lots of water or no water and heat.

What are you all growing this year?

Our apple and plum trees are starting to fruit, even though they have some problems. Plum has leaf curl due to aphids and the apple has some sort of bacterial or fungus issue. I missed an early spray but I hope I can keep on it with light sprays throughout the growing season.

Onions are taking hold after their transplant, squash are starting to take off, and the tomatoes seem to be doing ok too. The planter box has chamomile in it. Potatoes are coming up as well. Chickens are doing fine. More rain this weekend. Growing lots of fuel for July/august fires?

Might buy a crock pot this weekend to do venison roasts in. Also plant some super hot seeds that I’ve been unsuccessful growing for the past few years. Old photos from gardens past. One of those shots was my pepper bed; jalapeños and other “less” spicy varieties seem to grow better here with the shorter growing season. Still need to be started early. 👍 Unrelated.

All the best.

Edit: excuse the jacked up truck, and enjoy the neighborhood bear instead. Peppers under the lights were just left to go…LEGGY! Hehe

So I went out to check on the bunnies, one was out of the raised bed so I left the bird netting pulled up. I was hoping mom was working on it, moving them or whatever. 5 minutes later I go to take a shower, look out the window & what do I see??? A hawk flying out of the strawberry bed with a baby bun in its talons. :he

If that isn't my life right now summed up in a paragraph, I don't know what is. LOL

I told him that I can buy a jar for $1.25.🤣
Home made is SO much better than store stuff!

This will probably clear 6 residential properties of mosquitos.
Maybe you could charge your neighbors' an extermination fee.

I was hoping mom was working on it, moving them or whatever.
The Eastern Cottontails here seem to get the babies (only one at a time!) to "self sufficient" stage and ignore them ever after. I've never seen a baby with a mom.

We have had good luck with peppers (even bell peppers) and tomatoes but I can't hardly grow anything else but radishes. My carrots kind of did ok, my broccoli kind of did ok, still have not had success with zucchini or summer squash :'( it's killing me!

Not sure yet what I'm planting this year. Tomatoes and peppers, probably will try carrots and green beans again, radishes and then. Ot sure. Probably will still attempt zucchini and summer squash. Shouldn't be this hard, imo.

I'm digging out the sod on the "straighten the fence" project. While doing this, I am finding LOTS of grubs. Yay for the chickie snack, but boo for the :ducgrubs.

Freya was out with me, "helping" me dig. Until she took off. She was gone for 45 minutes and scared the crap out of me. I have no idea where she went. I was walking and calling, calling and crying, and she came back like nothing happened.

She had done so well off leash this morning. Maybe she saw a deer...? Back to on leash for a while yet. But she's home safe, and that's what matters.
So happy that Freda is safe Sally!

Good afternoon all. I got my errands run and the ice out for the chickens in about an hour. I was blessed twice with a shady spot to park. The only thing that does is keep the seat and steering wheel from blistering your skin you touch them, but it’s still a blessing. I did nothing strenuous but I was soaked and had to change my shirt when I was done. The fruit trees are looking rough, might need to give them more water again in the morning.

I move the old umbrella stand the one with the broken support tube, not under there, but looking out of the tube is a little, squishy tree peeper frog as small as a quarter, but living in a long steel tube, an echo chamber.
He sounded like a bullfrog and being 25 feet up on a deck, he was broadcasting for a mate clear across the valley.
I took him down to ground level where he might actually meet a Mrs. Right, or Mrs, Ribbit.
I feel like we're infested!
This is so funny. I recently was listening to a nature podcast that was talking about small frogs increasing the chance of getting a mate by using a rolled leaf to make the sound of their calls louder, basically spoofing the call of a larger frog. I think you might have a very smart little froggy!

Our Penny got out of the yard a couple of weeks ago and she took off like a rocket, DP saw her disappear behind a trailer house. Fortunately, Penny looped around and DP was able to call her back with a container of treats. Freaked us both out but Penny had a great time.

@Coldd, great garden porn!
