I planted Vinca.What did you do in your garden today?
I picked a bunch of Rattlesnake green beans and Cherokee wax beans, a few tomatoes, three eggplants, some broccoli shoots, and jalapenos. Pretty happy with today's harvest!

It was an eventful day! What a day! Some of this Isn’t garden related but I need to share.
In the garden we planted rows of kale, chard, spinach, and will be doing collards tomorrow. We separated a few tomato plants and out in supports. they are just t-posts and 2x4” welded wire. I was going to use cattle panels but that’s one more thing to buy so I decided not to.
We decided to take a walk around the park behind our house. I joked about seeing a moose and that if I got a deer this year that I’d like to pack the whole thing out so I could break it down a bit more so that the dog could get more scraps. We quarter everything as the hike out makes taking the whole carcass unmanageable. (Generally 3 miles one way by foot.) We saw a beautiful osprey fly over, and we saw a woman who was stopped by the side of the highway. She looked worried! I hollered to see if she was OK; “There’s a dead horse by the side of the road!” Huh? An elk had been hit and road killed right there.
After talking it over I wanted to see if I could salvage it. She wasn’t big, but not small. At this point it would be for dog food, probably 100-125# worth at least. We feed our dog meat, veggies, and some kibble for the probiotics. I waffled back and forth trying to judge if it was worth trying to quarter and pack back to the house. Going home I tried to make room in the freezer, texting back and forth with my friend to see if it was a lost cause. I have a coworker friend who lives down the highway past me a ways. Him and another work friend talked about doing the same just the day before. It turns out it was hit probably Friday night or Saturday AM. I’d be all over it if this was a cool fall week, but temps have been up.
50 bucks says quartered meat would be OK, but with my luck I’d pop something and have a giant mess on my hands. You have to remove the entire animal if you start breaking it down. I still feel a little bad as I know some hunters lose/track animals for two days and still recover. I guess where I was going with this is that it’s a shame to see some things go to waste. It seemed like too many things gs lined up for it to be a coincidence. The moose, talking about packing animals out. At least the birds, bears, or other critters will eat well. Beautiful sunset and we saw a moose.

Edit: getting razzed that I didn’t go out and get it. I need to take my gf along hunting to show her how much work breaking down an elk is.

Morning. Still cool here at 50 this am. I hand pollinated 5 squash. 
Can't wait to not have to buy it! Only 1 flower on the cukes, still waiting for them to get a little bigger & grow more flowers. Not sure how long I can hand pollinate them before getting annoyed with the netting. Next year I will not mingle cukes & squash in the same bed.
My 2nd broody gave up after we kept harassing & tossing her out of the nest, thankfully. My soft shell layer is doing good on layer feed, but still a pain because she's in a separate coop & run with the main flock eating all flock.

Me too!!! 1 had already died sitting in the tray so thought "I'll just stick em under here!" So under the tree they went with the nasturtium that aren't lookin so good.
I love all of those ideas!I keep hoping they'll do an incentive program for grey water set ups and rain water harvesting. Right now we do both...our washing machine is set up to drain outdoors instead of into our septic and we use buckets to catch any usable water we can. Like the water in the shower when we're warming it, rinse water from dishes etc. I'd love to redo our kitchen though so one sink drains into a catchment for use on landscaping and the other goes into the septic. We have multiple bathrooms and I'd love one tub set up to drain outdoors for the family members who don't use conditioner too. I love water conservation...but wish they'd approach it from ways to get the maximum use from every drop of water rather then restrictions on what we grow.

In California the big deal was having a green lawn. I have no problem with not seeing a beautiful, luscious green lawn at every house. Southern California is a desert, the only thing that saved it was the aqueduct, but people called it the land of milk of honey. It’s not and they’re getting a taste of that now. Also, the state doesn’t allow water collection as far as I know, or didn’t when we were there, which is pretty ballsy if you ask me. If I pay to use the land, the water on it should be mine. Why let it just flow away into the gutter and down the street?!
Good day yesterday. Bad day today. Raccoons are the enemy. Going to be fixing fence all day and collecting chick parts.
