What did you do in the garden today?

zucchinis this year are a big failure. I have just seen the very first pepper that I planted between zucchinis. if they manage to bear fruits then nothing is wrong with soil. someone told me that my zucchini must have some fungal disease. hope my peppers stay safe.

I bought starts as usual (same small family farm where I have bought before), but it took me about a week to get into the ground. They were not stressed or anything while waiting to get planted. But, squash doesn’t not like to be transplanted, and so the week wait may have allowed them to get big enough to be opinionated about transplanting. They struggled -so I tipped them all out and started fresh (same spot) with seeds, direct-seeded. These are much happier. Of course the herbicide overspray from the big farm fields in all directions has an impact, but everything is recovering from the last (hopefully) herbicide application.

Getting ready to head out and work on the sunshade while the wind and temps are lower.
After that is up, i really need to prune suckers in and out of the hoophouse.

Phew, I just pruned the poop out of my squash plants under the netting & started trellising them all. It's so much more in control under there now! It'll only last a couple days tho, lol. I hate squash plants, my arms have such a reaction to them. If I had known that was my objective I would have worn long sleeves.

The last 2 kitchen cabinets will be here today, please let the 3rd time be the charm. If so I can call the counter people to come out & measure. I want to can all the strawberries & rhubarb but counters & a sink make that easier.

Hadn't heard about the cattle and I can't wrap my head around how something like that could happen.


We use these big plastic things in metal cages. Don't remember what they're called...but they're cheap, durable and hold a lot. Course, then we went and built brick enclosures to hide the ugly things so you can't see them from the house, so not sure we actually saved any money...and we had to leave one side open for maintenance or replacement if it's ever needed...so you still see them depending on where you are in the yard. But they're over ten years old and still going strong.View attachment 3157426

Have you considered using a stock pond? Remove the plug at the base and add a pipe on the opposite side, fill it half way with wood and top with soil. Makes a nice raised bed with a water reservoir so watering can be done closer to weekly. This one's been neglected for a while and needs stripped and topped off before replanting...but it grows all the water loving plants with less care. Just stick a hose in the lil black pipe once a week until water starts to come out the drain hole on the side. View attachment 3157443

I think they’re called water totes? I’m reluctant to use plastic because our sun rots it in short order, but those might stand up a bit, especially if they’re surrounded to protect the plastic. Good idea, thanks!

Vinegar. You can make a very lovely scrap apple vinegar with the drops. Wont be as sweet as cider but will still be lovely.

Interesting..... I need to do this! It's too bad I tossed everything so far. Oh well. If we don't find many more, I know what to do next year.

I have so many questions about caring for these apple trees. We have 4 in the yard that are quite large, and the gypsy moth caterpillars are all over them. The smallest tree is probably 15+ feet tall, and the biggest has to be over 20 feet. Every time I learn something new about them, it really just brings up more questions!

Supposed to be cooler today - low 80s instead of mid-90s. And a breeze too! Sounds like a good day to work outside. Maybe more pullets will lay today <crossing fingers>
