What did you do in the garden today?

....because....?

I promise, they do NOT sing that dumb song from the 80s.
I've been very hit and miss when it comes to onions. I'm just worried I will mess it up since they aren't just bulbs you plant and forget about them (other than watering) until it's time to harvest...

It’s been a hot week. We’re into summer for sure…dog days maybe? 90’s mostly and sunny.

The girls are taking the heat OK it seems, they have places to find shade and stay out of the sun. The coop and run go into the shade around noon for an hour or so and I spray the run with water before I leave for work and after I get home. Ice in their waterer too.

They have been laying eggs, typically 3-4 per day out of a group of 8. We’ve had a 6 egg day as our best. One seemed to fart out (harharhar) a yolk. That was gobbled up by the others. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Transitioning them to layer feed as I was trying to use up the last of the starter that I had.

In the garden things are OK. Tomato’s are doing some leaf curl from the heat. I’ll be putting shade cloth over them. (We we’re worried about not getting enough sun…I think they get 8-9 hours on full blast.). Fruit is setting and coming in finally.

Squash and pumpkin are taking over and growing up the back fence. Small Hubbards are appearing under their little canopies. Haven’t checked the others closely yet. The corn/bean/squash mess is a mess. Need to get in there to have a closer look. Beans are climbing the garden fence. Tobacco is looking good even if there was some hail damage. Squash continuing to grow from the compost…maybe it’ll set something in time? Beets and carrots are up.

Drip system is going in this weekend. Archery opener is a month or so out, I believe I will be ready. Planning a visit from my folks too so I can finally share some outings with my father.

All the best.

I did plant surgery today. The zucchini plant that I was originally worried about only had one grub thankfully. But the other pumpkin plant had about 10, so that plant got really butchered lol. I’m hoping they’ll survive.

What I did was I got my dissection kit out and used the scalpel to cut the plant open and then I pulled them out with tweezers and then used water to flush it out in case I missed any. After I flushed the plant I dried it too, then gave them plant bandaids. I felt like a real surgeon lol.

Your surgery looks amazing! Did you feed the grubs to chickens?
Well felt worse today than I did yesterday...just beyond exhausted! Sleeping at night though, 2 naps yesterday with 2 grandbabies (don't ask how I did that...but no kids were harmed lol!) Then same today but DH and DD were here to help!
Felt like o neglected my garden and babies so went out walla go...surprised Mr. Rabbit! He looked at me like a statue...as if I couldn't tell he wasn't supposed to be there! I had to shoo the dadgum thing off!
Cucumber plants appear to be slowing down...is that a thing? They go hard as they can and then start dieing out?
Height wise they have grown probably 12' high or more all trellised up and wrapped up around deck railing and starting to come back down again...but only see a few on there and they seem yellowy instead of dark green like my others have been.
Tomato plants looking good and ripening...few on one plant have what looks like rain spots on tops and sides, not bottoms so not BER, but they are brownish rather than white. Didn't have phone to take pics.
Hope tomorrow's a better day for you!

Tobacco! That's an unusual crop! Do you cure the leaves and make cigars or something?

I've been busy working on chicken and duck stuff. Got two mini beds refreshed and ready to plant though. Think the highs were only in the 80's today...might of been hotter. But lots of clouds and the tease of rain that never actually fell. It was a beautiful day at any rate.
My rain lily's are enjoying the humidity...nothing's changed but the moisture in the air and that sets them blooming ❤️

Something was eating my chicken pellet bait in my cage type rat trap, so I smeared peanut butter mixed with boric acid on the trap peddle. The reason why I used boric acid was to kill the ants that are attracted to the peanut butter. I woke up one morning with that idea and it worked. I caught a small mouse and there were no ants.

I usually see lot of ants when ever I use peanut butter on my 5 gallon mouse trap, so I stop using it. This is the one where the mouse climbs up the bucket and fall in on the trap cover and drown. Now that I know how to get over the ant problem, I will use it again.
