What did you do in the garden today?

I've been trying to sow purslane all summer and the dang rabbits keep eating it all before it can get established! 🤬

Ah! I plant marigolds to help keep soldier beetles off the tomatoes. I'll definitely plant more next year.

And move the garlic/onions to the other end of the garden.

Where, right now, the butternut squash is growing zero squash. I don't know what happened. No female flowers. I read that heat can make that happen, and we have had the heat! I think I'll buy a couple of b-nut squash this fall and skip growing it next year. Last year we got zero, and in years past, we've had 50. Or 90.
I love marigolds! I forgot to start them this year.... I found one baby butternut squash yesterday. It might be the only one I get, even though it has been flowering for, like, a month and a half.

We're dealing with the same heat here. It's stifling. I really need to get something else planted because much of my garden is fizzling out but it's so hot that I don't want to go out there, lol.
We've had an abundance of watermelon this year though! We have been harvesting all season, 1 or 2 here and there but last week we harvested 12 melons all at once! I've been trying unusual watermelon recipes all week to try to use some of them up.

It's weird, I know, but hear me out, this was pretty good! Lol!

I've been watching your videos, and I never knew so much could be made with watermelon!

Fingers crossed you get some more squash! My Tan Cheese Pumpkin just started really taking off as well but we should have plenty of warm days left to get more pumpkins. When is your first frost date?

Thank you so much for watching! :love I'm still learning the whole recording and editing thing but it was really fun trying all of the unusual watermelon recipes!

I got a lot done today, besides sweating. I picked a bunch of ripe and almost ripe tomatoes. I will be canning next week.

I also pounded in some 8' posts. I had to rig something to lean them against, since I didn't have a helper. But they're in, and I've strung wire and string around the garden above the fence. I really hope that will keep the deer out.

Tomorrow, I'm going with a friend to pick peaches. I am out of dried fruit, so that's where a lot of them will go.

My Atlantic Giant Pumpkin plants have at least 5 decently sized pumpkins on them, so there's that, at least. I am really unsure of how I am going to preserve them... I definitely don't have enough jars for everything I want to do....

First average frost is the week of September 21.

I canned peaches yesterday, but I've never done it before, and I am concerned I did it wrong.... they sealed, but the peaches rose above the liquid... do I need to eat them sooner than anticipated? (In hindsight, I should have used all clear or all green jars)

Oh ok, our first average frost is November 24th. We have a very long season.

This is a jar of peaches we canned this year. I think we just crammed more in the jar but they still seem floaty so you're probably just fine.
