What did you do in the garden today?

A few people asked about asparagus beans. They grow fast in this heat! Lacking a trellis, I strung twine all the way across the yard.. we will see how far they go. They are just starting to flower so I'll update once they start producing.

Finally hand pollinated a couple spaghetti squash before the rain started today. Bees have not noticed them yet.

Anyone know what's going on with my cowpeas? Think I might be overwatering. This planter has brand new kellogg garden soil, which has worked great in Cali, but of course it's a different formulation here in FL though it still should be 'complete'. The chives seem fine with it.

Since the seal of the new Ball lids don’t dent in like the old ones, I’m sure I’ve accidentally reused lids.
I saw that even if you are nervous to reuse lids, you should reuse them for pressure canning water. Canning water fills in empty spaces, but it’s also good for fish tanks, eye rinse, nasal rinse, baby formula, or if an emergency strikes.
Anyway…I canned water in 2019, and all of the lids sealed, and were fine when I used the last seven or so jars in June.
OH for putting UP backup/emergency water- yes, we do that as we are on a well pump system - no power means no water.
I read that too fast. LOL My used canning water has stuff in it from siphoning, ew. LOL.

they look a bit pale, they might need fertilizer ..

INstead of pumpkin, do cushaw or boston marrow squash, that's what is in those cans. The size of a well tended cushaw will stagger your brain! My last one was 3 feet long and 9 inches across at the top and 14 at the bottom, shaped like a schmoo. HUGE amount of fruit in that beastie.
Illinois grows a lot of pumpkins for the canning factories . Here it is the Dickinson pumpkin . A Moschata group with butternut squash . Libby's and Joan of Ark . MN used golden Delicious ( Boston Marrow was one of its parents ) . Huge fowlling until the factory closed a few years ago . Cushaw is great in pie . I want to try pink banana AKA South Georgia candy roaster .

Good afternoon gardeners. We finally reached day 7 of our heat wave around 11:30 am when the thermometer hit 90F. Then around 1:30 pm a scattered thunderstorm hit and dumped an inch of rain. The first time I was able to use my new rain gauge. The temps are in the high 70’s now and although it’s quite humid, there’s a nice breeze. This morning I picked 4 okra pods, two handfuls of cherry tomatoes, some basil and my first bell pepper. Tonight it’s pasta primavera for supper. I also cleaned up the row in the potato patch to plant peas. I’ll be soaking the peas then planting them Thursday morning. I know I’m taking a risk but hoping I’ll get a crop before a heavy frost. My fourth planting of carrots is coming up as of a few days ago. The turnips seem to be doing well as are the second planting of summer squash and cucumbers. The downside to a good drenching rain is that the grass is growing and is looking a bit ragged. I’m not complaining. Have a great day.

One of my chicks found these ugly white wiggly…larvae?…in the grass today. Do they look safe for her to eat? Anyone know what they are?

Looks like fly maggots of some kind. Beyond that, no clue. And probably okay for your chooks. Hell, my girls eat anything that isn't nailed down and some things that are. :p
