What did you do in the garden today?

Haven't posted here in a few days 'cause aint much happenin 'cept waterin. Trimmed the okra back again today cause it was gettin tall again, Still gettin enough every other day so's we cab eat some and put some in the freezer.
Filled in some blank spots in the garden today with alfalfa seed. A 6x35' spot where onions came out of a couple months ago and filled in the blanks where only a few p-nuts grew.
Was supposed to have a 70% chance of rain today but I watered all the seed in anyway Good thing I did "cause the weatherman was wrong again! It's 6:30pm and ain't seen a drop yet!

Wild desert honey is definitely delisherous. There’s a local that sells it at a stand on the side of the road near where my husband works. It’s the best in flavor we’ve found around the valley so have been repeat customers for many years.
We rarely use honey so it lasts us for years. In fact, we rarely use sugar in general. If I do, it's usually Stevia in my coffee or a Tablespoon of it in our spaghetti sauce recipe...

Here’s an update on what’s happening at the house.

It’s been very hot. I had bought a shade cloth but rolled it back after some of the tomato’s recovered from the heat. The garden is messy but looks healthy.

Squash are kicking out some fruits (Hubbard, acorn), pumpkins too. (Sugar pie). Corn is getting tall (popping corn and sweet corn. Not sure if we’ll do these again.). Beans are climbing the fence. Beets are growing (greens 4” tall so far.) and carrots are slowly going as well.

We have some VERY fat zucc’s going. Tomato’s are extremely bushy and doing well. Girlfriend is not interested in pruning…what have been your experiences with it?

Tobacco is doing great, it LOVES heat and getting lots of sun. Many leaves are 18”+ long and maybe half as wide. Beautiful plants, I will probably grow again next year just to have them in the garden. Hoping to paint the chicken coop this weekend.
The hens are putting out 4-6 eggs or more a day on the regular. I added an outside hanging waterer and want to fill their run with mulch. They make wonderful, duff out of old yard leaves but we are running low.

Archery opens up in a few weeks, have a trip to go see my folks right before. Hoping for a good season.

Here’s some photos! All the best.

About honey . It is said basswood flowers make one of the best honey . Not common here . Lots of basswood at the cabin . Tempting to have a hive there but not practical . Too far away . We do have lots of black locust here . Makes a good honey .

I haven't met a honey I didn't like yet, lol. The local honey in fall is darker and I don't love it as much as the spring honey but it's all good to me!

You should try some of the honey from the Killer Bee guy. I posted the link earlier. I'm not really even a honey lover but WOW... You know it has to be good when someone who rarely eats honey buys 6 or 7 jars of it. I was eating straight out of the jar with pretzel sticks.

Yall help! I tried to give away bout 7 lb cucumbers and unable to...sure wish we all were closer to each other so we could share!
I have to figure out what to do with these cucumbers and about a dozen tomatoes (all different kinds n sizes) before in the morning!
any suggestions?!
Dill pickles are nice, but lots of folks want bread & butter pickles. Same with the red salsa I can. There's always whole or chunked canned tomatoes and of course, sauce. I canned so much myself I won't be canning tomatoes this year except as salsa since I have lots of all of it left from last year.
I have never grown tomatoes from seed. I think it may be the only plant that I have an ongoing war. Do you get better results from seed?

Not necessarily better results. I get more variety since seedlings aren't available for the vast majority of tomatoes or peppers I'd like to grow or just try out.
Like Carole says, it's that you get access to varieties the stores rarely if ever carry. Same with peppers.
I have bees for my own honey . I do not do sugar feeding except in a emergency . I leave enough honey to feed them through the winter . I consider sugar a poor substitute for honey for the bees . I understand why sugar is fed . Trying to maximize income . Taking the honey and feeding sugar . After all sugar is cheeper than honey . I want my honey raw unfiltered . It goes through a fine mesh screen to remove bits of wax .
I heard years ago about the adulterated honey out there. I was told that one way to spot the bad honey was to see how clear it was. If it was clear as glass it was very possibly cheap Chinese honey that might have almost anything stretching it and contaminated to boot. That it would be clear as glass since the Chinese filtered every scrap of pollen out to hide it's origin. And one documentary posited that giving bees sugar water was one of the causes of hive deaths. That the inferior food weakened the hive and left it open to other small injuries that added up to dead hives.

I always intend to and sometimes even start out pruning suckers like a proper gardener. What eventually happens is what I am doing now, I cut back anything that is too big to tie back and doesn't have tomatoes of any size yet. Cherry tomatoes get a little extra leeway but then again they are usually the worst ones for trying to grow over everything.
Here’s some photos! All the best.
Lovely garden!

Got all of the zucchini shredded, drained, bagged up, and frozen. My best 100' hose burst today but I'm going to try and repair it, it cost too much to give up on it. Some of my tomatoes are finally showing a bit of color. Still waiting for the Fall carrots and chard to sprout.
