What did you do in the garden today?

Found conk mushrooms growing in the garden. We go up to Mount Lemmon to mushroom hunt and pick apples every year...well, mainly just to play...but an excuse to play is always nice!
Anyway...I always pick a couple conks to play with so I'm really happy to see them growing in my garden. I always let the conks I bring home dry in the garden hoping they'd spread spores but wasn't sure it'd work.View attachment 3232950

I love that! That's so cool!

Here we also have cabbage loopers. They are a white moth with a black dot on wings. Their babies are green caterpillars that are very hungry. They destroy the brassicas. Spray these caterpillars with Bt spray. This is a Bacillus bacteria that will cause the caterpillar to stop eating, and it does not affect other things, and is considered organic, I believe. The main problem with any spray on brassicas is that the brassica leaves are more water resistant than other veg-everything just rolls off! But keep spraying, squishing, and picking them off.

Otherwise, see if you dept of Ag for your state has any helpful guides - some states have a lot of helpful info.
Thank you for the info!!! I have a feeling we're giving them to the chickens this year. I am pretty sure I saw hundreds of tiny worms last night and I sprayed with 7 again.... Doesn't seem to be working.

Need to get out there and hand pollinate now :( too tired for a garden today but I love zucchini and summer squash

What about a late summer/fall planting of kale and spinach? Can you beat the bugs by avoiding having plants for them to eat? Grow the plants later in the season?

I find that when it comes to pulling fat caterpillars off leaves, they have sticky feet, they can cling pretty well, you end up smooshing them trying to pinch / squeeze them to get them off the leaves and get that green gungus on your fingers. A much easier method is to grab a chicken, lift her to the level of the caterpillar, point and she'll take care of the rest for you :)

I told our local extension office that we REALLY need a class on identifying mushrooms. They were holding one but I found out too late and couldn't go. We have a lot of different kinds of mushrooms growing around our property around the trees and in the pasture but since the only mushroom I can definitively identify is a morel I'm scared to pick and try any of them.

How do I keep the bugs out of my broccoli and Brussels sprouts? Is it too late ? I spray them with a self mixing Seven but it doesn't seem to be helping. Should I dust them with something I remember an older gal I helped when I was a teen did that. Just over the bugs! Maybe I skip broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts next year :(
You can try BT which will help with the worms. The best solution I have found is to cover them with a row cover or bag each plant individually. The individual bags are easy to make if you can sew.

BTW, I had my DH make me some frames from 2x2s and I stapled some insect netting to the frames. I hinged the tops for easy access. I used these over my broccoli plants and had ZERO worms this season. It was glorious...
