What did you do in the garden today?

can you kind of throw some treats and lure them back into the pen that way? mine that works about 90 percent of the time.

I can if they are close by. They free range on about 2 acres which is partially wooded. They also wander over into the neighbor's backyard and back lot of the funeral home next door which blocks them from seeing me well enough to know there are treats. DH told me to throw firecrackers in a metal coffee can instead of the bottle rockets due to the fire threat. I'm also working outside today in hopes that I can also act as a deterrent or at least hear something.

I went ahead and pruned down the peppers since it will be dropping below 50 degrees consistently at night after today. Going to dig them up and transplant to a container. Fingers crossed that I can replant them next spring! Now what to do with all the extra peppers... I have at least (8) gallon sized bags of peppers in the freezer. DH is going to complain for sure.

In the 40s again last night so time to bring in the rest of the tomatoes. I was looking for green tomato recipes and I saw a few for green tomato pasta sauce. Has anyone had that? I'm going to make a small batch and see if we like it.

Good afternoon all. The rain stopped earlier this afternoon. We got about 1.8 inches. I did a quick peek into the garden when I let the dogs out. I have 3 heads of curly endive growing under the bell pepper plants. I tasted it and it isn’t as bitter as what I harvested in the Spring. I have a couple of bell peppers and some more green tomatoes. It looks like we may get a light frost next Wednesday morning so I’ll leave all that to grow a bit more until then. I’m very excited to follow on your adventure of establishing your homestead @Elyrian1. I wish you all the best in this process. Ok @NewBoots, you caught my attention with the green tomato pasta sauce. I’ll google a recipe for that. The trees in my area did a really quick change from green to beautiful autumn colors in just one week. I would love to take pictures but my neighbors might be a little disturbed. Lol! I’ll have to sneak a picture or two somehow. Have a great day all.

Those tobasco's my plants just went stupid with them. A few years ago I made jelly with them and it turned out really good !! You can make hot sauce with them too or just puree them down, mince / whatever and freeze them that way as well for future use to spice up foods. Making chili, throw a whallop of pepper goop in it, a sauce for the meat onthe grill, put a tsp of pepper juice on it etc.

Yesterday I planted seeds in all 3 beds. It was still 94F (today also) but it's supposed to drop to low-mid 80s tomorrow and the days following.

I planted just a couple of the tomato, pepper seedlings I had started -- didn't want to lose them all if the heat was too much.

Carrots, scallions, cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, kale, lettuces, spinach, collards, cilantro, parsley, cucumbers, bush beans, and some dill and marigold interspersed for 'pest control.'

Brand new gardens, so we'll see how it goes.

I originally planted them for hot sauce because my family eats a RIDICULOUS amount every month. But we still have around 4 large bottles still unopened. That's probably a years worth... Not counting the (8) gallon bags I have of frozen hot peppers or the 4-5 canned jars. DH has begged me to quit planting peppers for a while. It's a sickness....

My 3 purple broccoli plants are sprouting new leaves after I pruned them down to the main stalk. Hopefully they actually produce some broccoli heads this time. I have a couple of new plants started (just in case).

Cauliflower is coming along nicely.

Scored 6 new icing tubs (3 - 5 gallon each) with lids from the deli at the store today. I will use them for self-watering planters or for waterglassing eggs.

Cooking stoves, there are plenty of companies that sell full blown ovens / stoves for cooking and heating the house on that just burn wood. Ive looked into this and often times toyed with the idea of building a big room addition to the house, call it my 1800's house or something and it's just a big kitchen with the wood oven / stove, and old time back in the days stuff.. for cooking. I really do need a bigger kitchen as it is now, or at least storage for all my cooking toys. Some of these ovens have hearths, pot burners??? everything on them and are really nice! TBH an ole fashioned pot belly stove like you used to see in train stations with a burner plate on top would suit me fine too. If i went the 'wood oven' route, to be honest id probably build a big pizza oven outside. that of course would cook other stuff too but...

Roof water you would think would be clean but bird poop among other things can cause you BIG problems, hence the need to sterilize it, or if you are in a hurry a cap of bleach works too. If you did dig a well, even if was a slow pump well with a few gallons per hour, those hours add up. You can also build a cheap filtration with sand / charcoal etc to get the big bugaboos out and then just heat or uv/O3 to kill the critters and no seeums in the water.

Back in the day the kitchen was moved to a screened in porch for the summer . Known as a summer kitchen .

I mowed some leaves for use in the garden . Already more on the ground . Probably a twice a week job until they are all down . I mowed once them put the bagger on and mowed again . Reduces volume a lot .
