What did you do in the garden today?

says going to hit 37 tonight, that means frost me for me. dammit, I did not get the heater installed on the tilapia pond. I might use a heat exchanger I use for purifying ... umm.. water. to do a makeshift something to keep them warm. Thankfully I only have half a dozen or so for the time being so if they go tango uniform it's not a huge loss and being it's a cold death, i can still salvage them in the morning for a snack.

Got the rest of the run covered & cut new filters for the windows. Blocking the nest boxes tonight - I have one molter left who is still sleeping in there & I'm over it. Cleaning the coop out this weekend so she needs to get back on the roosts, sick of a dirty nest (at least she sleeps in the one no one lays in).

Garden is put to bed till next spring. The yard is cleaned & everything is put away.
This is the first time we have been "all done" with the leaves this early. They've helped us by coming down earlier than usual.

We have about 3-4 compacting inches of snow on the ground. I broomed off the roof of the run twice today. I hadn't asked my chicken sitter to do that, because it didn't occur to me that it might need to be done. So there's some hardened snow/slush that will have to melt off. No biggie.

I got the water heater and the lights in the run put up. The coop and run are winterized now. Check that off the list.

The snow is coming down again... It is pretty. Glad I don't have to go anywhere. We went to the store because we didn't have much in the fridge (gone for a week), and we're good till I have to get the last few things for Thanksgiving dinner.

I noticed that too. I used to buy femur bones in packages of 3 for $10 just last year. I haven't seen them available all year. Not sure why because my store does their own butchering. So weird....

here they sell it for animal feed production. chicken legs as well. and who knows what else?

The sustained temps dropping below freezing every night for days have pretty much killed off everything in the garden including things that should have been frost hardy like broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce. Such a bummer because my cauliflower was coming along nicely. Normally it doesn't get and stay cold like this until January.

when did you plant winter veggies? here we start them in july.

Ask the butcher TJ, our store normally sells them but people get them before they’re even on the shelf. We’ve resorted to going to an actual butcher shop to get them these days.

We had a solid freeze two days ago. I salvaged a dozen or so green tomatoes - if they ripen they will be the last of the season. :(
You’ve had an amazingly long time to grow them this year Sour, but I hope what you’ve harvested ripen so you get a few more BLTs!
