What did you do in the garden today?

Sometimes if you do not leave a lot of headroom, the popping of the cap going down may not happen until you move them or play with them. They may pop once but should not be popping in and out, just one pop per jar as the shifting gives it the little push it needs to pump in.

In your case, it was still very warm in there so inside the jar was warm so there wasn't a lot of pressure difference between inside the jar and inside the cooker. once you removed the lid off the cooker the temperature cooled down in the headspace in the jars, which gave them that extra little 'push' from the outside to pop them in.

Each time you can, each different thing, it's going to be a little bit different. It's like brewing beer, no two batches are going to be EXACTLY the same way. over time you learn the little nuances and learn whats 'normal' behavior, although it may not be seen ALL the time, when it is, it's still normal. and what's something to be wary of.

I experimented when I did broth last week - only the old lids failed on me (& just old, not re-used - I don't re-use them). The new ball sure tight lids all sealed. The old lids were given to me from a neighbor though so in reality they could have been years & years old. But I was happy all the new lids sealed.

I posted a video of that a couple years ago here - it was funny! The jar did seal fine in the end. I do believe I over filled my jars a bit that time, I make sure I no longer do that & I haven't had any siphoning since (no clue if that had anything to do with the popping tho). I was guessing on an inch headspace & I was wrong, lol. It was more like 3/4. Got that down now. :lau

YES! This is exactly what mine were doing, only faster. I also had a couple of jars that were popping like this AND sputtering liquid from around the ring (siphoning). After letting them sit for 24 hours, all of them seemed to have sealed. I didn't think they would because of the continued popping but they did. I've never had them pop like that before but this was also my first time pressure canning... Normally I just waterbath jams and such.

Had a bunch of onions from the summer harvest that were sprouting in storage so I went ahead and planted them. Hoping the weather stays warm enough for them to get established. It's been in the mid-50s this week but hovering around freezing at night. We'll see if they make it to spring. I'll cover them with a thick layer of straw tomorrow. Did the same with some sprouting potatoes too...

Hope everyone is enjoying Thanksgiving prep today! I'll be making a crust or two for Apple pie - baking it either late tonight or tomorrow. Homemade crust dough for pumpkin pie in the freezer, so that will get thawed and rolled out tomorrow. We will make something with the sweet potatoes from the garden. Teen has been asking for a sweet potato bake we had at a dinner theater earlier this year, so might have to look up a recipe. Turkey arrived on Sat - we bought a smoked turkey, so its already cooked!

I really need to begin my seed orders....but haven't had the time!! Hopefully this weekend. Have a great day.

here is a secret for today......i hate cooking, especially for the holidays, and wish I could just spend the day in the garden (though snow covered I would do it) or out with the chickens, lol.

going to make a freeze dried food order, black friday sales, and then going to place a seed order today, though I can't decide where to order from.

We're doing our Thanksgiving on Sat. We've passed the torch on to the younger generation to host holidays so they go to their SO's families tomorrow & then we all get together on Sat.

I have all my seeds for next year. I got an email from High Mowing that my spaghetti squash this past summer could have been some type of cross pollination mess up so they gave me a credit. Good to know since all are great except 1 - it's tiny & green (even though ripe). That explains the mutant!

I'm still debating on not doing a garden next year, but I guess I'll wait to see how the back feels after surgery & decide then. I keep feeling like a year off would be fantastic, but then I see the price & shortages of food & think it's probably not the time to skip a year.

I'm cleaning. Prepping for tomorrow. Need to make some pumpkin bread later today.

Tomorrow, DH is deep frying a turkey and smoking a duck. I'm making Southern style green beans and maybe some baked apples. DD is handling the desserts. Not sure what she is making but it has to do with Oreos. We also have pecan pie. Other family members are bringing some other dishes....potatoes, mac and cheese, etc... Gonna be a busy day! 😊
