What did you do in the garden today?

Another place to throw extra insulation is under doors. Take a few towels and lay them on the ground and kind of smoosh them in door jams, because rarely do those seal right and it might help keep a little cold out of the house.

On the citrus, might be a blood orange that just didn't get there yet. They might ripen a bit more on the counter if you let them.

Cluck - those trees, there is no way in heck you'd be able to get sheeets on them or anything that'd be any sort of useful. If you did it will end up being a huge sail area in the wind and just get torn off, possibly breaking stuff in the process. I think they'll be fine, and again you can always get the fruit off AFTER the storms etc pass. If you are very lucky, the storm will pick them for you and you just scoop them off the ground. The very cold though is probably a good thing. I know a lot of trees need some cold hours. With this snap coming through, I fully expect my pear and apple trees to do awesome next year, NO excuses this time :)

Frost inside the door?! Wow!!
OH ya. Our fine andersen windows and doors all have thick frost on them and around them. I've complained for 12 years in this house to andersen. They say it's the humidity in the house. A hospital grade, digitally controlled humidifier on a high tech controller, uh huh. I have it down to 25%, which is frankly too low. I contend that it is their poor seal around the glass and the fact that the gas has failed in several of the windows. But what do I know?!

Here's the windows in my sunroom this morning. I actually need new windows in the whole house because these suck... But I've never had them frost up like this before.

The power is out in the surrounding countryside, including our street, but not in the towns. Of course I have a whole house generator so we are fine. We also have a fire going so the house is toasty warm. I feel bad for my neighbors. It's currently -10 below zero F. All the animals are staying inside except the ducks. I swear they are stupid. They have multiple sheds and wind blocks in addition to their coop and they choose to hunker down on the ground in the open. Smh...

I put food and water out for the chickens this morning. I'll check to see if they went out to get any water. If I don't see tracks in the snow to the (heated) waterer, I'll take out a bowl of snow and put that in the coop for them to nosh on. I've done that before, and it worked well. I put food in the coop, but not water, to keep accidents from happening, and to keep the humidity down.

I didn't leave the people door open, as it faces north. The 30-40 mph winds are out of the north and west. There is a dusting of snow everywhere in the run, even though 3 sides of the run are wrapped/have wind break panels up. It's open to the east, but is protected by the garage. That wind is whipping everything around anyhow.

Just wandered into my new studio (empty) which used to be son's room, to grab a ball of yarn from the closet. The NW corner of the room, frost from floor to ceiling!
I plugged a fan in to circulate the air there to keep moisture from settling and to move the room air around the colder wall. We've NEVER had that happen before (and we have been this cold)
However, the room used to have a warm boy, and a fan going in there, so we think that is the difference. One exterior wall is brick, and the other is now steel siding which was put on this past spring.

Snow in the pens and on the birds

Other pen, this rooster is going to lose his whole comb to frostbite I think.

Goats in the workshop now. Yes, they have water too.

View out our window. Flag getting shredded, and it’s only been up for a few weeks. Do you see that blob behind the tree? Yes? It’s a SEMI stuck - he’s been there a couple hours, has help coming, but we did go check in him.

One of our windows. Ice on the inside.

The run and coop. The only open areas are under eaves, and those upper triangkes( one here, and on other side). They are all heavily protected by roof as you can see. The coop has a decent amount of snow inside and stuck to the walls, etc.

I tried to check combs this morning too. Didn't see any that looked like obvious frostbite but I didn't get a real good look either. I'm really hoping I don't get any but I know the odds probably aren't in my favor. I went inside the coop. It's at least 20 degrees warmer in there. Still below freezing (eggs were all frozen) but felt like Club Med compared to outside. Most of the chickens were hanging out inside the coop or the goat house.

Just checked on the hens via webcam, they're out there all partying in the sunny run. They want to go out. Not happening. DH is getting ready to take them out some leftover hot spaghetti with meat sauce. He'll dump it right on their crumble. It's a nice heat boost for mid-day. They're out of the wind (-28F currently) so it's -2F out now, which is nothing for my birds. Coop and run is far warmer than that. I'll have DH peek at the thermometer when he goes out.
