What did you do in the garden today?

We still have plenty of snow left but the fence is taller now and some pavement and muddy grass is emerging. The sump pump is coming on every 5 minutes or so but it’s melting. My hens got out of the coop and run briefly. Tomorrow sunny and above freezing for more melting. I’m thinking about trying to grow a little lettuce indoors with the new equipment I ordered.

Does your flock enjoy the snow Sarah?

Yea I think I would probably never try tomatoes in it. Start them - sure, but not to actually produce anything. It did a fantastic job last year starting my thyme to move outside. I’ll have to see if I have any lavender seed I could start. Lavender is my nemesis, I cannot keep it alive outside here.

Got out to see the girls, my red is molting. Shes 4 & never molted (well, not a noticeable molt anyway) & to do it in Jan? 🤔 Weirdo. Explains her not laying anymore & beats her being sick!
I’m glad your red is ok, but this doesn’t seem like the best time to molt lol.

I actually have a Spanish lavender plant that has been around quite a few years. It lives next to the rosemary and I swear I neglect it. Then I water it and it blooms like crazy every Spring for me. Maybe you’re being too nice.

It’s the winter that kills them. I’m def not too nice, its do or die here! 😂

My girls will not step foot in snow. They HATE it.

Bought a bunch of seeds at Menards today. Grabbed super seeet 100 cherry tomato, various herbs, carnival bell pepper, a nantes type carrot, sugar snap peas, yard long beans, and some others.
People here are going nuts buying up seeds. Try to find a pole bean pack, it's like looking for Tuts tomb in a snow storm...unlikely to happen! I'd love to get some sugar snap pea pods too, but they are hard to find ATM.
But I did get my beloved pumpkin, winter squashes and giant sunflower seeds. :wee

Froze last night. Managed to keep the water running though!

More of my homesteading youtubers are talking about Dumor/Producer's Pride and egg-laying slowdowns and dead stops. Not the preppers now, the regular homesteaders. That's when it gets worrisome.

I'm getting 5-6 eggs a day from my girls since I switched. Told hubby "Eat all the eggs! We're going to be swimming in them!" Haha!

I'm not doing much for the garden still. I give it a bit of water now and then when it's above freezing.
I saw the Dumor/Producer's Pride also being mentioned on The Gateway Pundit. Not sure if I agree with their theory but it's obvious that more and more people are noticing the change.

Now, all seed orders have been received. I looked for all melons I ordered…this year. Sooooo..18 varieties. Lol. But, 6 watermelon, 6 orange flesh musk melons, and 6 that should be honeydew type. I really hope to get a honeydew. I’ve gotten a few watermelons in the past, and some musk melons, but never a honeydew.

Will they all get planted? No idea.

That's a LOT of melons.... 😂

You might need to change your name to Acre4Melons

Tonight I'm in the baking up a flock block for the chickens (in the oven now). It occurred to me afterwards that I should have added some of my extra seeds that I don't want or need. For example, I have an entire package of iceberg lettuce that has never sprouted anything each time I've tried it... I could have thrown those in. Some old sunflower seeds too.... Maybe some others if I dig through my garden drawer.

I try to use them up or give the away, but this is a good idea too. I have a BUNCH of packets of seeds with "just a few" left.

Of course, be sure they aren't poisonous. Thinking of castor beans.
