What did you do in the garden today?

We finally got a good almost all day rain on Thursday!
10 chicks hatched. I think that will be all but I left some of the eggs in the incubator for another couple of days just in case.

if I were you I would keep the raspberries and put hardware cloth or similar so that kids cannot go near.

I considered this option. The raspberries are coming up right in a pathway though. I could consider digging some up and relocating them, but these things already seem so invasive and I don't want anything to do with that. A pot would be the only way I would consider growing them.

We just planted 8 raised beds of raspberries, and built a new bed for the existing raspberries. There are 4 varieties. One long cane type that produces 1x per year. Another short and thin cane (mostly upright) that produces summer thru fall (until frost). The other two -I’m not sure about bc we received those two types from a relative. Hopefully we don’t have much problem with spreading raspberries.

Rain today. Was supposed to be close to an inch, but now it’s down to 1/4” prediction. Lows into the 40s next week, so planting peppers and tomatoes will wait until after that.

Just pop the lid off the bottom and the rootball slides right out when you plant them.

Yes! It works really well, too.

Plus, those pots are free, and they last several years. Some of those are on their third season.

I grew up knowing that raspberries are red. 8 years ago I learned there are yellow raspberries but always sold out. from this thread I learned there are black raspberries as well. yesterday I got lucky. returning from athens I stopped by a nursery and got 1 of each: red, yellow and black raspberries and 1 blackberry.

I am happy now to learn that they spread out as they are a bit pricy so only 1 plant of each raspberries allowed this year. I have to do too many things about my new place and house so fancy planting has to wait.

as for blackberries they are easy to propagate. wherever they touch the ground they root.

I used to have 200' of raspberry beds on my old farm. Heritage (red), Fall Gold (yellow), and Purple Royalty (purple). I don't remember why I didn't have black raspberries, because I love them.

The Fall Gold fruits were incredibly sweet! But they did not produce very much and were hit by disease.

The Purple Royalty fruits were okay, not super flavorful, and more difficult to manage.

The Heritage was, of course, the easiest one to do, and had classic raspberry flavor.

I ordered pink banana squash seeds as they are not in the seed racks. Bought mother of thyme but was looking for creeping red thyme. I needed to know species name as I did not recognize any of the names they had. No rain yet but predicted through Sunday. DD is fine just not allowed to drive for 6 hours after procedure.

Today I'll mulch my tomatoes. and maybe plant a few more for caners.

Good morning gardeners. The grapes are all planted and watered. Also got the blue lake bush beans planted yesterday afternoon. I still need to spot water my hydrangea as well as the lavender and pansies in front of the chicken yard. It got up near 80F yesterday as promised. Today I missed my garden walk because we actually got a little rain shower. That's okay. The plan for the day is to fence in the new garden area on the slope and that's pretty much it for now. That might take the bulk of my day. After that I'm kicking back and resting. Tomorrow is plant shopping day (mostly flowers) then Sunday is a day of relaxing for Mother's Day. My goal is to get everything planted by the end of next week. That is except for my order from the Arbor Day Society. That will be a dogwood tree, a keifer pear tree and a forsythia. That order maybe here in June. Have a great day all and happy planting!

Morning. Behind here again & I don't know why, not like I do much all day, every day.

My bestie came over yesterday & transplanted 2 volunteer Sungolds to the big pots on the deck that I can reach - super happy I'll at least have some tomatoes this summer! Surprised I only have 2 volunteers this year, maybe a couple more will pop up.

I watered everything, the beans have sprouted. I planted 3 kinds of poles. I ordered some sweet success cuke seeds last year, I may plant those on a trellis & just see if I get anything before the bugs kill them. I think @Acre4Me recommended them as they are pretty disease resistant. (and don't need to be pollinated, which is why I got them for under the netting but that's not happening!)

And of course I have a broody. First almost 90 degree day & she does it, same thing every time. Heat triggers her. DH is going to have to set up the breaker cage when he gets home from work.

My 3 pullets come tomorrow, got everything set up for them where I can manage feed & water.

Oh & I heard the F word on tv this am! Frost! Possible next week, wth, thats too late. Maybe they are talking for just the hills.
