Tomatoes don’t grow too hen it’s too cold. Over nutrition is not usually a problem, and almost never turns them yellow. I suggest you add iron to their water and see if they turn greener. Yellow leaves can also be a sign of begomo-viruses. Good luck.

Here is what I learned about rootbound plants. I used to buy tomato plants and take cuttings to root. The cuttings grew faster than the original plant because it was rootbound. Planted deep or horizontal in a trench they grow new roots. Breaking up the root ball a bit when planting also helps. The cold did not help them. So they have had a rough start.

Interesting! I gently pulled off the roots that were encircling the pot when I planted them. They probaby had too-wet roots at first too, because I watered, then mulched them heavily. Then the cold hit.

Thanks for the insights, but I've decided to just pull those plants out the bed. They're suffering, and they might have gotten diseased from being so weak. So safer to cull them, I think.

I'm going direct-seed tomatoes in their place to find out if the direct seeded tomatoes catch up to the indoor-started plants I put in the garden yesterday. Heck, they might do better being planted in the garden as seeds.

I bought these grow lights through Amazon in January and they work really well. Full spectrum, with cable hangers (no stand though), and each one is one square foot in size. I hooked them up into a mechanical timer to start the seeds out on 18 hours a day light, then as they grew I cut the hours of light back somewhat, to around 14 hours a day.

I place the lights about 6 inches over the seeds as they sprouted and all were short and stocky. My first attempt at growing seeds, using regular incandescent bulbs made the seedling tall and spindly- probably 6 inches tall. I threw out those plants.

Awesome, so they cover two square feet, much better than the one I just got. I was looking for something like this, thanks for sharing. I think the larger 2ft one has 10year light life based on 14hours a day.

I need tomato help. Here are some pics of tomato plants that I put in the ground a few weeks ago.
I had some yellow looking tomato seedlings about 3 days ago, but they turned green after I mixed an additional 1/4tsp of Epson salt into a gallon of already mixed Master Blend solution. My seeds were started in coco peat, so I knew they needed nutrients.

I just went ahead and plucked them out and tossed the plants with their rootballs into the woods. I don't really think they're diseased, but better safe than sorry. The basil I planted at the same time looks the same, yellowish. Leaving them in place to see if they perk up.

Also, I used the yogurt containers with their lids on as little greenhouses/frost protectors. So, at least 2 uses!
:thumbsup
what might be a basil that is perennial in zone 5, which is surprising.
I need more info about this... I'd LOVE to have perennial basil.
