What did you do in the garden today?

WOW. our sweet and dent (feed and ethanol) corn is only about 12 inches high.....
When was it planted? I sowed mine on 4/22. 😊

BTW, according to seed info, time to harvest:

Damaun - 85-95 days
Buhl - 75-85 days
Country Gentlemen - 90 days

So by that account, the BUHL should be MUCH further along than the other varieties. Sad.

I removed about 4 squash from the vines today, blossom ends were turning brown :(:hmm

Today in the mail I received some markers for my gardens, as part of a free promotion, and I really like them. The label is slate, you write on it with a slate pencil. Neat.

We got at least another inch of rain this evening. I'm glad I put out some fertilizer around the hazelnut trees yesterday but I'm hoping it didn't all wash away! :barnie

Took advantage of the cooler evening to put the shade cloth over the determinate tomatoes. They are all lush and full and brimming with fruit. I probably should prune them since they are so full that they don't have much air flow... But since I laid down cardboard that's covered in straw (instead of wood chips like last year), I've had zero problems with leaf blight on them...

Then I glance over at my indeterminate tomatoes and feel guilty. They do not have a shade cloth. And other than ONE San Marzano plant, the other 3 plants are struggling. They are have very sparse foliage, MAYBE one or two tomatoes (if any), and are struggling with disease. I fertilized them a few days ago so I'm hoping that (along with this healthy dose of rain) will kick off some growth & recovery.

Once all the rain stops, I'll spray for fungus as a precaution, especially since the temperature is going to crank into the triple digits....

I added to my compost pile today. I mowed a section of the yard and raked up all the cut grass to get green stuff. I cleaned out dirty woodchips from the coop, and dirty pine shavings from the chicken quarentine cage. And I loaded up a wheelbarrow full of woodchips from the pile out back.

After lots of layering the ingredients and hosing everything down, I increased the height by about a foot, and increased the footprint by about 6 square feet. I'm going to have a lot of chicken compost one of these days!

Same wave, my friend! šŸ˜‚

:hugs Oh my gosh, I know! I feel like Dori 🐠, it's a BIG wave, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, lol.

We spent Saturday through Monday at the hospital and tonight a tornado touched down on either side of our neighborhood. It literally dipped and weaved at just the right times to dodge us. I'm eternally grateful but utterly exhausted and I'm ready for a break!

I tried out the onion hoe I bought myself the other day. It worked as well as I hoped - yay! I took out nearly every weed in the garden with it. I still have a few weeds in the original bean row that I left until the replacement bean plants come up. That needed replacements because the gopher ate most of the bean beans.

At the same time, I also bought some stakes? Fence posts? I'm not sure what they are supposed to be. They look like lengths of rebar with a triangle welded on one end like t posts have. I'm hoping they work for the peas to climb.

I planted the last four broccoli plants, another four marigolds, and a stretch of beans. Also a packet of cosmos for the chickens to eat, hopefully after the cosmos attract any aphids in the area but before the aphids population spikes up because they like the cosmos so much.

The first of the strawberries are ripe. We are competing with the birds for them. I'm thinking of trying a scarecrow.
