What did you do in the garden today?

We did in 2019, chickens still got in. But deer and raccoons didn't. We don't have squirrels, tree squirrels.

Grounds keeping was a nightmare.
We had he 150 foot fence and the heavy duty corner posts.

Luckily I have "obstacles" on 3 sides, provided they don't jump over... I could put hot rope up higher on those sides. That leaves just the side that I actually enter on. Right now I have weed barrier and mulch down on that end so that DH doesn't have to get the mower or trimmer near my veggies. And that section of the garden is only 10 ft x 20 ft so not a lot to maintain. Here's a picture of this area from earlier this spring.

What is your humidity?

I can tolerate heat, have been living in the Carolinas for 35 years, but the humidity is what really makes me ill.

Humidity right now is 87%.

Later in the summer it doesn't cool down at night, lows in the mid 80s with high humidity. AC is a must, central air conditioning is a blessing.

60-90% this time of year, just had a shower cooled things down nice but air is hot and thick.. miserable humidity

it's a high jump & they have no good place to land with the raised beds in there.

Yes, they usually don't jump into places where they don't see a good landing spot.

They can jump high or far, but not both and they prefer to not jump into places they cannot see unless they are in a blind panic.

My neighbor has bushes around her garden, and deer can't see in, so they don't jump in.

This is my fence. The posts are 8' tall, and the top row of flags is at about 7.5' tall. Deer can clear that... but they haven't been in. There's a 4 foot tall welded wire fence around, but going around with another course of fence would have been too much $$. It's about 350'.

I got the mess I made yesterday cleaned up, and removed a section of hog wire fence I attached between my house and the shop. All before it got too hot (my hot, 80 degrees).

Watered the garden first thing this morning too. Figured that the deer-pruned veggies could use some water to help them recover. And I need to plant new bean seeds to replace the plants that the deer plucked and ate the other night.

My chickens seem sad and anxious being locked in their run. They'd gotten used to having a good 1/4 acre to play in, but they wanted to keep going farther and farther. And I really don't want one of them (or more) to be taken by a predator. It's a big investment in time and money raising a chick from scratch. Pun intended. Haha

New additional run plan is still being figured out, but I'm making progress.

Going to pick a lettuce plant that's growing tall, getting ready to bolt. And a turnip, some kale, and parsley from my garden later on when it's been in the shade for a couple hours and make a Big A$$ Salad for supper. Add a little pepper jack cheese, coarse ground pepper, honey mustard dressing, olive oil and parmesan and it'll hit the spot.

This is the section of hog wire fence I removed this morning. It's now stored under the cluster of fir trees, where the grass don't grow. LOL

Edited to add: just planted the green bean seeds and watered them in. Didn't take long, only a dozen seeds were needed.

Edited again...: Actually, I planted yellow wax bean seeds. And they are black.

It's thick out there - 80% humidity, but not too hot. In too much pain to do anything though so it doesn't matter. We had an inch of rain overnight. Dog spent a couple hours in bed with me last night because of the fire works (he doesn't sleep in bed with us, ever).

My wildflowers are so pretty, I will def plant them again. The bees are very happy. Had to put out another cucumber trellis, these plants will be huge! So far liking this 'sweet success' variety, can't wait to harvest & taste! I think @Acre4Me recommended them as a cuke that doesn't need pollination.

ETA: ohh, I have green beans about 2 inches long, can't wait!

I have a couple birds molting already. I think the broody I broke last week & another EE. I'm not ready! I don't have enough eggs stored up!

Anyone else have birds molting yet? Is it normal for a broody to molt after - think she'll lay again or no?

I don't know about molting, but I think one of my Black Australorps is "on hiatus" already.
