What did you do in the garden today?

Thank god for popcicles.......................my head got fried out in the garden!
I got the ones in the soft plastic tubes.

Always a treat! We have a small chest freezer in the shop. We put meat out there since we don’t need to open it all the time. Well, meat supplies are low, and we have 2 young teens staying with us soon for a week. I bought 4 large boxes of the big popsicle tubes (FWIW they are here during fair week, so their diet will be shot anyway, what’s a few more popsicles). I put them in this chest freezer bc my kid (a lover of all things popsicle) hopefully wouldn’t find them. My kid just found them yesterday…didn’t even try to hide it…sauntered in with one in hand. Well, at least kid didn’t hide the fact she found them!

Need to make a correction. The panels I bought are not pvc, they are Polycarbonate. But they do protect from UV rays and are good in extreme heat and cold.

I have polycarbonate panels over half of my run. They are holding up VERY well. They're 83% light transmission, so kind of milky looking. I took the drops (leftover pieces) and made windbreak panels out of them. No, you can't see through them, but they sure block the west (prevailing) wind!

We got about 2.5 inches of rain last night. Poured hard sometimes, but not much wash in our driveway. I'd say our drought is over now. YAY!

Are those similar to ground cherries? I gathered a small handful of some this evening. I ate them all before even reaching the house... It's weird because some of them taste almost like a sweet cherry tomato. Others taste far more sweet & fruity. I know they are a relative of the tomato/tomatillo so I'm not sure what to think about them yet.

I'm used to sneaky cucumbers, but this was a surprise. I'm almost 5 days late tying up the tomatoes, which are stretched on cattle panels, so I can get to and see both sides, and I came across THIS beastie deep in the leaves. HUGE DiLucca. I also found the frass of one hornworm, a small one which the hen ate. So the hunts begin.
She also ripped into a SanMarz before I could shoo her away. Sigh. Oh well.

Evening rain coming. Took some persimmon cuttings and potted them to root. Another experiment. Others have had success. My other cuttings are still looking good. Patiently waiting for roots to form.

One of my neighbors has burning bush along two sides of her garden. They're probably 6-7 feet tall, 5 feet wide. The deer can't see what's behind them, so they don't jump in.

I'm considering taking cuttings (she's offered them) to root and plant around some areas of my gardens, as extra buffer against deer. I double checked with hubby that he's okay with that, as he's the mower. I'd be the one to string trim below them and out a couple feet until they get big enough to not get mowed over.

Does anyone else have a living fence like this?

I don't, but other houses in my neighborhood do. They're not huge long shrubs, but they're like tall skinny trees planted in a row.
