What did you do in the garden today?

Came out of the garden with 12 tomatoes.
So I went back in and cut all the plants at the base except for the early treat and Bodacious, which still have nice fruit going.
Our prolonged heat of three weeks and another one above 100 this week, didn't allow for blossom or fruit set. The plants look great, but there is no fruit on them except for high tiny things. Anything that sets after this week's heat won't have time to ripen and wont be worth my efforts, so clip.
I also cut the giant multihead sunflower from the flower side of the garden. There were no more blossoms for the pollinators, just seed heads, which I have dumped on the other side of the garden fence for the hens and birds.

Too hot and pollen-y out there to do anything else.

:idunnoI don't think I could ever be a farmer and dependent on the weather. It's about all I can handle on a tough year in my gardens and things don't grow well.

:clap Fortunately for me, this has been one of my best years for gardening since I can remember. Lots and lots of peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, and new this year is we grew bitter melon.

I only planted one zucchini this year, but I'm still getting about one picked zucchini per week. Just about the right pace for Dear Wife. Last year I had 5 zucchini plants and Dear Wife was beside herself trying to use them up. Having said that, she made a number of zucchini breads and put them in the freezer. We enjoyed that zucchini bread all winter long, and, in fact, just took out the last one last week!

:caf I still have too much to learn about gardening, but I try to plant a variety of things with the idea some grow better in a hot summer, some grow better in a cool summer, and some do fine with our average summers. That way, I usually can count on some modest success in the gardens. That, and I usually plant three starts hoping that two may survive.

Because of my mom getting sick and then dying, my garden suffered this year. I did get some things but only probably a quarter of its initial potential. I decided there's no point in being upset about it. Just accept it and move on. There's always next year. My goal is to improve my knowledge and methods every year.... That's also why this thread is so valuable to me. I learn from so many of you. 😊

Sorry for the loss of your mother. I know when my parents were in their last months, lots of things suffered, myself included. No shame in rearranging priorities in your life when times require it.
