What did you do in the garden today?

Wow, color me surprised, the photos match!

I've been chucking the fruits over the fence back into the woods for years, thought it was some sort of mock orange.
I liked the black walnuts but didn't like my hands turning black when shelling them.

My neighbors hulled them by spreading them on their gravel driveway and driving over them for week or a few weeks - I don't remember how long and I think it may depend on how often you drive up your driveway and how often it rains.

In the last few years, I tried hulling them off by hand while dry, hulling them after soaking, and letting them hull themselves before picking them up. I don't recommend any of these ways but maybe I'm doing something about it wrong.

If you are going to plant them, you don't need to hull them.
Yep, this.

Ugh, I cleaned all 3 coops and the goat house. Put down fresh bedding for the goats and ducks. I swear I'm going to end up with miner's lung from owning chickens! 😷

Finally got the new platform moved into the garden and moved the strawberry barrels onto it. I have lots of runners just hanging. I really want to pot some up but they've already put the soil away for the winter at the co-op. I might check TSC tomorrow and see if they have some. The platform ought to make it easier to pot up the runners because it gives me a flat base to set them on and DH/DS won't hit them with the mower or trimmer.

Poultry keeper's lung, it's a thing, and I'll be sitting right next to you in the waiting room.
I specifically did the poultry house on a windless day to cut down on the blowing, but the dust and dander just hung there in the air, mocking me.

I planted garlic, spread some kale seeds, did some clean up in the front yard where I chainsawed down a crepe myrtle tree (only 3" diameter trunk).

Finally I planted my ginko tree nearby.

Well, don't give up all hope. I live in northern Minnesota and was able to grow tropical bitter melon this summer by staring the plants inside the house a few months before our average last frost date. That extends the growing season for us. I'm not saying that the bitter melon grew as well as they would in the tropics, but we did manage to get quite a bit of nice fruit before it got cold this fall.

Also, I think it's best to plant any tropical plants maybe 2 weeks after your last frost date, just to make sure you don't chill the plant.

Next year we plan on starting some more of those tropical plants in the house, transplant them outside 2 weeks after our average last frost date, and just hope for the best.

Picture of some of the tropical bitter melon grown in my northern Minnesota (Zone 3b) garden...

Wow! And you eat them? It is really bitter... I'm always confused on why people grow them... I am thinking it's extra healthy?

I use sand in the coop on the floor and poop boards. I created a custom scooper to sift the poop out of it but it creates an INSANE amount of dust. Even with a mask (which I admittedly only wear sometimes), when I blow my nose afterwards it's brown sludge every time. Gross... I can imagine what's getting into my lungs. I should probably wear an actual respirator but my husband would never let me live it down.... 😂
