What did you do in the garden today?

our first freeze *might* be Sunday night…but the entire following week has lows in 40sand 50s! I’ll take it!

We still have rutabaga, parsnips, peas, turnips, and celery growing, along with some herbs.

Yesterday I picked quite a few very ripe raspberries. So good with vanilla ice cream! Pretty nice for mid October!

Meat chickens are quite large. 4 have died for unknown reasons, but the rest are probably loving the cool weather. They have 10 more days to grow. Butcher date is coming up.

Our 2 goat does (age 18 months) are going to be getting a temporary roommate soon. A buck will join them for 4-6 weeks hopefully resulting in a few spring babies. Having a goat buck will be an interesting, possibly smelly experience. However, the vet assured us that while it might be smelly, it shouldn’t be too bad bc the buck will be housed with the girls rather than trying to impress them from afar…we will see/smell soon enough.
OH a goat in musk. Enjoy. BLEH

I picked the last of our cukes and peppers, and then cut down those plants from the bed. Into the compost bin they go! Also cut down the last basil plant since it didn’t have anything to salvageable on it. A handful of small cucumbers and the basil got tossed to the chicks, which they seemed to enjoy. It looks like we’ll dip into the high 30s in a week or two.

Our saffron crocus have started blooming recently, so I’ve been snagging the stamen to dry when they’re ready. I had a second planter-full, but I don’t think they made it with the summer heat. Those were in full sun on the porch, whereas the ones that came back were in morning sun only. Noted :yesss:

I’ve got a few things in the garden beds, like carrots and shallot, so we’ll see how they do over the next couple months.

Went out to clean up a bit in the girls' area and the middle granddaughter went out with me to help. The girls didn't like the rake, shovel or granddaughter being in their area but they started to settle down. I dug out a few areas so Darlin got about 5 worms. Little One tried to avoid being around us. Darlin decided she needed to get on my lap for a few minutes. My granddaughter was like "WHAT!". I had to laugh a little. That's about all for now.

It was too windy today to vacuum out the feathers from the coop and runs with the lawn vac. Maybe tomorrow.
I did cut down an old wood ladder for winter roosts in the sunny bit of the run. That left me with a 4.5 foot ladder for the main coop to install the winder windows.
I also permanently installed an old general store ladder to our workshop loft. No more creepy, bouncy ladder. We plan to install a pulley on the ceiling to get things up there without dragging them up the ladder.
Local hardware store is going out of business (sigh) so we went down to get anything we saw that was part of a future project or that we were out of.
I'm going to miss that place.
Washing our winter sleeping bags atm so we can crash on the deck and watch meteors later.

Today, I cut open a three-month-old air layering bag that I forgot about, it was on my seed planted Pickering mango tree. I used a peat mixed with local bought topsoil, instead of straight coco coir. It was compact and hard as a rock with visible signs of root growth on the outside part of the mix. I will soak it in water over night, I hope it softens up.

Next, I will try straight Pro Mix, Coco coir and Miracle Grow potting mix on three separate branches to see which one performs the best.

You don’t find coco coir to be too much? I always add perlite or vermiculite to it or my stuff drowns. Maybe I water too much.

LOL. while you have your coffee, I'd be sucking down an energy drink if it was my morning time.

Ugh, I did bugger all today except clean house and used Sunday for rest instead. Neighbors were having a party apparently that I slept through. I'm trying to decide what to do with a free 200L kratky pot and part of me wants to just try stacking some more leafy greens in like Kankong with Egyptian Spinach. But if I did that I think I'd only use so much NPK and put more cal nitrate in and just keep cutting and cutting back. Kankong loves the water so if you are a person that loves to water things, KK will reward you! I'm really thinking I should of direct sowed my garlic chives instead of in a seedling tray.
