What did you do in the garden today?

Today I need to get some more seeds planted. I'm hoping to use my 2 small green houses and some screen material to keep the cats out of the garden. Fingers crossed I can get it done before Saturday.

The germination is poor, as is the selection, and bush beans turned out to be pole beans two years running.

I had beans a couple years ago that were bush that were supposed to be pole. Annoying.

Such purty chickens... What breed is the red one on the right?

That's Sally, she's one of 3 new pullets this spring - 'Our Brown Egg Layers area healthy cross between a White Rock egg-layer type female and a Rhode Island Red male'. So I guess a red sex link.

Looks like we narrowly missed the frost last night! Yay! A good week of warm weather to enjoy the Dahlias & sungolds.

Morning Gardeners I went on Amazon bought Egyptian spinach and a arugula also picked up wild mustard seed.

Is it also called saluyot? I have them growing wild like weeds in my yard, they come in handy. I put the leaves in my saimin and chicken soup. It kind of remind me of okra.
They grow into a hard stem shrub, and I don't see any bugs on them. I never had a need to spray them, and my yard has a lot of white flies and aphids. I think the only thing that bothers them are grass hopers. I do see holes in some of the leaves.

I came across this video on You Tube, it was about a comparison between potting soil and sphagnum peat moss for air layering trees. The bark turns black with potting soil, and results were lack luster. I had a similar experience with potting soil.

I FINALLY got the jungle of weeds and dead corn stalks out of the hoop house.

I have one cauliflower plant that survived through the summer and is starting to produce again. It's being decimated by potato beetles though so I dosed it liberally with some spinosad.

Going to try to build another raised self-watering bed this weekend. It'll be 8 ft (L) x 2 ft (W) x 2 ft (H).

And I still haven't planted the rest of the iris bulbs yet... Ugh.

I'm glad I got all my tomato and pepper plants removed from the garden yesterday, because it's been raining pretty much constantly all day today.

I did get a chance to go out between showers and removed all the strings I tied to the vertical ropes that supported my indeterminate tomato vines.

Not much left to do in the garden now. Need to sift out some compost from the chicken run and top dress the beds sometime this fall.

Ugh, trying to summon the motivation to soak the coco blocks and get my hands dirty. Not looking forward to it but I wanna setup this kratky today since the nutes have already been dialed in. I just need to think of something that's a heavy drinker that isn't a tomato. I mean. I can do a whole lot of leafy greens but I'll be governed by space. Maybe lettuce on the outside and some sort of heavy feeder in the middle. I'll hopefully post up pics when I'm done.

It's basically non circulating deep water culture. You forgo the air pump and in turn as the roots drink up the nutrient, the zone above is where the roots also get the oxygen from. Think it originated in Hawaii and I watched some bloke growing peppers and thought that's a good idea. I'll use it too!
