What did you do in the garden today?

One plant of Lemon Boy is still in great shape with lots of green tomatoes. Weather for the next week at least is warmer than usual. I covered that plant with blankets - maybe?
The weather here is going downhill fast, so it was time to yank out the plants. It's been pretty cool the last few weeks too, and the tomatoes pretty much stopped ripening anyway.

It's kind of nice that the garden is winding down for the year. I still have quite a few carrots in the ground and lots of kale that'll keep me in fresh stuff through part of the winter, but it's low maintenance stuff.

And the green tomatoes I cooked were pretty tasty. Guess I'll be eating a lot of them for the next week or two. LOL

Today I bought a small bag of sphagnum peat moss and ground it up in my ninja blender. I put it in two small 3-inch round air laying jigs and snapped both on a root bound Fruit Punch mango tree branch.

The reason why I wanted to try sphagnum peat moss is because I saw someone on a YouTube video air layer a lichee tree with sphagnum peat moss wrapped with tin foil.

The critters are looking for a place to spend the winter.

The picture is a little hard to see but something dug about three cement blocks down before turning right. I assume it is a woodchuck. One lived under the neighbor's shed until the coyotes moved in there to raise their litter (two or three years ago). I told her about predator aprons and she hasn't had problems with anything living under her shed since.

I protected my shed/coop. I didn't expect to have to protect our house. I'm very relieved we have a basement. If it gets under a slab, it is much, much harder to encourage it to live somewhere else - like in the dens in the field behind us. Where it was happy enough for a few years. I don't like it there either because it is so close to my garden but I can tolerate it out there.

Eventually I just left, I could not deal with his stupidity.

I can understand how difficult it must be to work with some people who are clueless. On the other hand, they are probably coming to your nursery to learn more about gardening. That's your job, so you said, so I hope you find a way to turn those interactions into a more positive experience for your customers and yourself. It's always hard to deal with someone who knows it all but has everything wrong.

I am a Registered Nurse, among other things in my life. Believe it or not, I once was working with new mothers who just had a baby. One young woman asked me if they could still cook meth in the house when they brought the baby home! Without being judgmental, I thanked her for her concern for her newborn baby and that cooking meth in the house would not be good for the baby. Yeah, I felt like leaving that conversation as well, but I hope my comments made some difference in the lives of the mother and baby. Maybe not. But I tried.

I moved two modular 2X4 foot workbenches with wheels down into the basement today. I am still looking into maybe trying to grow some fresh cool greens under LED lights this winter in the basement. Maybe even try some DIY hydroponics.

Cleaning out the garage yesterday, I found a stash of unopened seed packets - maybe about 30 packets. Will have to sort them out and put them into my seed box, which is getting pretty full now. Don't know how I lost track of those seed packets, but I am hoping now that I have a designated seed box I will keep better track of my seeds.

I ended up just getting a small .30 ammo box from Harbor Freight, which is probably more than I need for my seed box....

Anyways, for about $4.00, it is water resistant and big enough to hold all my seeds for now. Bonus, my ammo box did not have that "Bunker Hll" logo on it. Just a plain gray plastic ammo box which I like even better.

I know it didn't have the bunker hill logo on it because after you told about it I bought 2,1 for me and 1 for my mom and dad. I love it. It has so much room in it. Thank you for letting me know about it also. I hope you have success in planting in the basement.

G’morning y’all. The only garden related thing today for me was my trip to Home Depot; I think I’m pretty much set to get the little picket fence built and get the dragon fruit containers set up. I grabbed some perlite too, but I think I’m going to need more. Gotta get the house cleaned up today so I can spend the rest of the week outside. Have a good day all.
Morning to you! I was wondering if perlite has gone up where you live? I swear it was around 40 bucks for 100L and now it's around 65 bucks.

Today was spent tending to the garden and getting fish hydrolysate/gogo juice on everything. I also went through my worm wee supply and used the majority of that on the borage/sunflowers/artichokes and the volunteer tomato. Tomorrow is going to be 33 and overcast so it's a bit of a worry but hopefully things'll survive. My seedlings are coming along. I may even just take blocks and place them directly into the kratky system. I have another drum to roll out but I need to cut into it with a jigsaw.

Chooks got too feed on some zucchini leaves that have powdery mildew on them. I'm kinda worried it's going to spread to my passion fruit and that'll be really sad. I have to stop procrastinating on the mites and do something. They are really having a party in the greenhouse. The quails are going to get strawberry snacks soon I think as I have been leaving them too long.

I'm really loving the palm tree kratky out front. My hope is that it will be a talking point for people when they come over in the front yard LOL. Hopefully. Oh I think the viking spinach I put out has also gone to seed.

Wow, everything is looking great!!

I don’t remember how much the perlite was the last time I got some. However, your price and ours for the same amount is pretty much the same. Also, this time I had to buy in smaller bags as the large one isn’t available right now. That’s because the rest of the country is slowing their gardening and those of us who can garden year round better be stocked up good or too bad so sad. Which is hugely irritating.

Thank you! That does sound annoying. Yeah the perlite at bunnings is pretty expensive as it's around $30 for only 25L. They are pretty good at most other things.
