What did you do in the garden today?

some of my flower sprouts are doing well

Others, not so much, I planted them at the same time 🤔

Really good under the lights. Today was spent watering and installing a gate between the yards so it's easier to maintain his garden. There's like a 2x2 plastic cube they use for trenches. I've planted out a bonica eggplant in the middle, some tomatoes in the corner and that badly thriving jalapeno fire eater. I'm surprised it's turning around after the transplant. Handed the shock like a champ.

If you've noticed in some of the previous pics you can kinda see how there's sweet basil growing along the border so I decided to pepper the opposite side where there's none with black basil. I'll be keeping an eye on it. Oh and I planted out a heap of those dwarf purple king and queen beans both in the subbox and in and around my other garden beds.

I'm wondering if I was stupid putting seeds in when the temps are ebbing and flowing in perth. Like, tomorrow it's 28c, okay then 32,33,34 I'm definitely deploying a shade net over the bit I can but the northern bed has no mesh over it for shade. The only reason I don't want to use the steel mesh is that it would make harvesting the inner part of the bed a nightmare unless there's a bloody garden gnome I can throw in there.

One idea would be to do a vining crop in the middle have it suspended up the to canopy of folded wire and just let it hang over the sides. Might be cute. I love the tunnel trellis mark valencia has and mine is just a fraction of his length. I have planted out a heap of watermelon and zuchini trying in vain to fill in the gaps. Really happy to finally see the white borage flowering. I'm not sure what the two little plants next to them are. Maybe one is a borage VT from before or the sunflower I planted along with the royal velvets. I do find it odd that the royal velvets are powering and the others appear nowhere to be seen.

I am getting some color on the VT tomato, it's like an unexpected present; now to keep it form being eaten by rats. Gotta make sure to take care of it during the heatwave. I cannot wait to mung on the squash oh and I wonder if the Kalanchoe will fire off another round for summer. Would be nice. I really love how they are a bit cacti like and yet have beautful flowers. Def growing on me.

Oh one of the new neighbors came over to tell me about my dogs that my lazy other neighbor let out and boy do I have to keep up! I was really hoping the incubator would of arrived by now and even then I don't think I'd be able to fill it to capacity. Oh well!

26F- first hard freeze. Usually there are more days of light freeze before such a low.

Yesterday picked the parsnips and beets. Forgot to pick any mustard. Maybe it has survived?

The sweet potatoes have had a long cure in their tent, but either today or tomorrow I should be able to get them inside.

The “Mrs. Amerson’s” winter squash is FANTASTIC. It is an heirloom squash and I see why it remained in circulation. Smooth and really sweet and very deep/bright orange. Cut up the remaining 7 squash and baked them, removed cooked parts and will freeze them. Next up will be the butternut squash.

@WthrLady - my current sewing project is a “puff quilt” -make little pillows (4” squares when done) and sew together, add batting and backing. Teen daughter has already claimed it and I don’t even have all the puffs done yet. It’s red, white, blue fabrics, some with various stars, so not the usual baby colors. Not quite so difficult as matching plaids though. My one and only foray into plaids was for a cloak hood - not too bad for one seam that had to match! Your dress looks great!

Accent are fascinating. I came a YT video a while ago about the Great Vowel Shift that occurred in Europe a number of hundred years ago. Truly fascinating since globalization at that point was nothing near what we’re working with today. Lol, on a shorter timescale, my grandmother moved west in the early 1940s, having been raised in Arkansas and Oklahoma, and I remember her telling me about her swift learning of how to say certain words, “boulevard” stands out as one of her examples.
I worked with a guy who had a bit of southern twang in his voice. I asked him where he was from, and he said, Grand Rapids (MI), born and raised. I mentioned the southern bit, and he said I'm not the first to ask. He told me his brother lived in VA, and when he went down to visit, he picked up the accent "like that (snapped his fingers)." When he would come back home, his family teased him about it.

The Great Vowel Shift! I've read about it, would love to see/hear a lecture about the actual changes that happened. Can you post a link to this video?

My favorite part of a dictionary entry is the etymology, the history of the word. How the meaning and pronounciation has changed fascinates me!

29 when I got up. I have sunshine today. :) Pic of sunshine on fall color. Second pic is my nut picker up. I have picked up 10 gallons and hulled them this morning. Got them soaking in a barrel of water to remove some of the black. View attachment 3671610View attachment 3671611
Wow! Gorgeous colors there Jerry, thanks for sharing! We don’t get much of that here sadly.

First hard freeze for us too... I did get the birdhouse gourds picked. Didn't touch anything in the garden. I probably should have put some straw over my oregano, thyme, and parsley... And brought the rosemary inside. I should do that today and hope for the best.

Sad to say goodbye to the tomatoes and basil. I'm sure they will be kaput after last night. 😔

We haven't even had a frost yet, but were getting a hard freeze wed/thurs, they're saying in the 20s. The s word is even being used. 🤔

I'm planning on some christmas lights under the frost cover. I'm really enjoying the lettuce/spinach.

We haven't had a frost yet either. Going straight to a hard freeze is playing havoc around here. I had dozens of dead flies in the barn that simply froze to death. Don't mind that part... 😂 But my poor goats didn't want to come out of their house to eat this morning. I will need to add more straw bedding for everyone tonight since it will be even colder. Dahlias were in full bloom... And I need to get deicers in the water bowls since it will get into the LOWER 20s tonight! 😳

I did a puff quilt back in the early 80s. SO warm. Your daughter is lucky.
That's exactly what you do with plaids, match the seams that matter and hope for the best with the rest. The cloak looks great.
Winds are howling here today. It's 22 but only feels like 10 at the moment. I'm donning my full 1880s attire for Halloween. It's wonderfully warm.
I need to go to town and rescue my truck from the shop ( I blew the alternator) and I cannot wait to return this prius to them. UGH. SO NOT a fan.
I need to check the condition of the mums on the front porch after 3 full days below freezing. The pumpkin is going to the alpacas later today, and if they don't want it, the hens.
