What did you do in the garden today?

I worked with a guy who had a bit of southern twang in his voice. I asked him where he was from, and he said, Grand Rapids (MI), born and raised. I mentioned the southern bit, and he said I'm not the first to ask. He told me his brother lived in VA, and when he went down to visit, he picked up the accent "like that (snapped his fingers)." When he would come back home, his family teased him about it.

The Great Vowel Shift! I've read about it, would love to see/hear a lecture about the actual changes that happened. Can you post a link to this video?

My favorite part of a dictionary entry is the etymology, the history of the word. How the meaning and pronounciation has changed fascinates me!

The History Guy did the one that I watched. He covers a lot in 15 minutes.

Yeah, tomato and basil foliage are damaged beyond repair from the freeze. I went ahead and picked the green tomatoes. No idea if they are far enough along or even salvageable but I just couldn't bring myself to leave them behind... 😬

Went ahead and brought the lemon tree in from the garage. I had tinkered with leaving it in the garage until this cold snap passes. It will warm up again in a few days. But it won't stay around for long... Within a week, nights are dropping into the low 40s again so I opted to just bring it inside. Now the battle begins to keep it from losing all the leaves before spring. 🤞🤞🤞🤞

We haven't had a frost yet either. Going straight to a hard freeze is playing havoc around here. I had dozens of dead flies in the barn that simply froze to death. Don't mind that part... 😂 But my poor goats didn't want to come out of their house to eat this morning. I will need to add more straw bedding for everyone tonight since it will be even colder. Dahlias were in full bloom... And I need to get deicers in the water bowls since it will get into the LOWER 20s tonight! 😳
Same here - a couple frosts would have been nice. I'm not sure what to do with the fig tree - kinda needs a frost to kill the leaves, but not really a freeze! Maybe I'll cover it. DH said he's not blowing out the water lines, they're pex so they should be ok. I didn't get out the heated waterers yet.

The only thing growing in our garden, which has become our chickens' run, is a couple rows of lilies. They're pretty overgrown and in need of thinning, but until yesterday the ground has been too hard and dry to do anything about it. But we finally got some rain! So last night DH and I started digging them up. We'll cure them in the basement so we can separate the little bulblets, and replant in the spring. The FOLLOWING spring (2025), we should have a nice crop of flowers and, hopefully, bulbs to sell. So when we plant this spring, we'll also have to mark and catalog what we have. Should be a pretty fun project.

Wore my full 1880s outfit in town. I was the ONLY one not bundled up like an eskimo. It was wonderful to not be freezing.
My fig is in a bucket in the garage. I'll water it here and there, but it won't go below freezing out there.
Mums are fine on the porch. The bricks around them warm in the sun during the day and stay a little warmer over night.
Hens get the pumpkin tomorrow.
