What did you do in the garden today?

When I made my pumpkin pie from my ripe pumpkins it came out a warm brownish orange color. It was wonderful.
It did make me wonder if the canned pumpkin has food coloring in it, does anyone know?

I think no on food coloring. Canneries use Dickinson pumpkin in the same group as Butternut squash. A rich orange colored flesh.

Very cold today, about 20 degrees at sunrise. It'll only warm up to the mid-30s. Tomorrow, we're going to get snow. 100% chance of it, they say.

Cold here today too. Everything is icy. I finally took down the unheated waterer - I can see I already ruined one of the nipples from freezing as there was a huge icicle hanging off it. No snow in the forecast here though.

Can't wait to see the new coop @Wee Farmer Sarah. I hope you got the right heated base, I use heated 2 gallon premade nipple buckets so I can't offer you any advice.

The frost cover on my greenstalk is working really well, still harvesting lettuce & spinach though it's not growing very quickly. I fertilized the other day hoping it would help but it was brand new, really good potting soil so they probably didn't need feed.

Chilly today. 47f now with a high of 50f expected A bit unseasonably cool for us. I will shortly venture down to the garden. I think I will be picking broccoli and maybe some cabbage. We'll see when I get there. May snag a few greens for the chickies. The garden doesn't need a lot of attention this time of year. Just check on things and make sure their are no invaders.

Just not ready for the winter. I have received 1 seed catalog with more expected. Gives me some browsing material. Don't think I need much but seems I always find something I want.

Still a few leftovers in the fridge so not cooking today!

2024 Gardening season, here I come!!

Just mailed my sweet potato order (Sandhill Preservation center) bc they just updated that portion of site for 2024. Old school, mail in order. But, they send confirmation with place in line sometime in Jan/Feb. I’ve ordered 8 orange varieties and 4 white varieties. All early season. So, clearly we will have lots of sweets next year.

Then, ordered some dried beans I’ve been wanting (grew in the past) but always out of stock where I’ve ordered them from in the past. Found a family farm that sells two I’ve been wanting, and two new to me varieties. Dried beans are great. They grow and you want them to dry out. No stress for picking at just the right stage.

Next up I should plan out the things we will plant and decide if I need to order any seeds. I shouldn’t really need any or very few.

Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cricket ate a mango and kajiri melon seedling last night. However, I still have some seedlings available in my seed tray. I will wait until they are bigger before planting them. I hope the cricket die after eating the seedling, they were covered in Spinosad powder.

Dug up some composted litter from the hoop coop and added it to one of my fallow raised beds

This one had Summer squash and peppers, and marigolds. Note the depth of the soil before I start (+/- 4" below top of boards)

Dug a trench... Hugelkulture sticks are gone, decomposed!

Went down to the garden. Looking pretty good.

Picked 5 heads of broccoli and 2 cabbages. Gave 1 cabbage to the chickens. That won't last long!

I'll be picking more broccoli in a few days. Looks like it will be a nice harvest. Pretty happy about that.
