What did you do in the garden today?

It is still cold today for here. Hovering about 40 degrees F and north wind again today. I am just taking care of the chickens and staying inside mostly today. I am spending hundreds of dollars in my head while going over the seed catalogs flooding in, now. If I change my mind and get bored I will move more leaves to the composting area for shredding. The chickens run has all the material it can handle most of the time for chicken composting /shredding. I make about 5 cubic yards of finished compost per year *(about two pickup trucks full) in my compost piles. That requires a lot of work for an old man. I may get a yard or a little more from the chickens efforts. The piles get all the chicken litter waste laden with poop from under the roost, leaves garden waste materials and misc. My worms get the kitchen plant waste and some of the garden waste. They make , maybe, a yard of worm castings/compost per season. It is never enough!

Decorative fencing. Mine would say, 'that's pretty" NOM NOM NOM NOM. plants gone
Mine might do that yet... 😂 It's mostly to keep the goats out more so than the chickens. I strung up some chicken wire in front of half the bed last year using some step-in posts. That seemed effective in keeping them out. I guess they felt it wasn't worth the effort to fly over it... But the chicken wire is ugly and not really something I want right by my house.... 🙄

Got snow and ice today... Bleh.

I ended up working later than expected and didn't get out to check the fence line to see if any chickens were out and trying to get back in. (My coop nets are wasted so a couple of them fly over the fence on occasion to free range without permission.) I decided to look in the barn to see if anyone was roosting in there. No chickens but I did find a secret nest with a dozen eggs in it. :barnie

My husband ran a hose from the washing machine to the dishwasher somehow so I could run the dishwasher, they were starting to smell. He's so handy, sure do love him. 😍 Doing dishes & washing hands after collecting eggs in freezing cold water stinks. IMG_20240105_181918529.jpg

1/2 an inch of ice on everything, 10 miles south, nothing.
Light snow tomorrow and 6-18 inches on Monday into tuesday depending on how bands set up. I'll move the tractor SUnday, and lock the noodle-necks inside. Sunday the birds can run amok for a bit outside.
Old girl is still with us.
I think she has crop problem. I gave her a little olive oil and a massage and extra grit in her cage.
