What did you do in the garden today?

I had not considered that they could be purchased in a store - probably in the vegetable section? I'll have to check into that. From what I understand, you just need one eye off the tuber to grow a new plant, and there are many eyes on each tuber.

From what I understand, the Jerusalem Artichokes can be very invasive, so it's best to grow them away from your main garden or in big pots. I'm thinking of making a 4X4 raised bed just for a patch of them.

plant them near the lake and don't tell anyone. in the years to come it might become a reliable source of food. my mother had them growing wild by a creek with no attention at all.

Dutch buckets

wtf. Why do they have this name?
I honoustly never saw these square buckets sold as common buckets in the Netherlands. Only rectangular ones for special purposes like cleaning or painting. And small square plastic containers with plants (often high for climbing plants) in garden centers.

Never saw them in ‘our’ Lidl. Was there last Friday and checked the veggie department thoroughly, because I wanted to buy parsnip's, who seemed to be sold out.

I never ate Jerusalem artichokes after a first try a few years ago. They gave me serious stomach ache.

I have been watching some YouTube videos on the Jerusalem Artichokes plants. Looks interesting to me. Super easy to grow and very hardy even in my zone 3b. I understand you have to grow them from tubers. I went to my local big box stores and nobody carries them.

Does anybody here grow Jerusalem Artichokes? Would love to hear what you think about them. Also, any suggestions as to where I could best order some tubers to get started? Thanks.

We have them growing wild here - DH keeps weed whacking them but they keep coming back, lol. I've never tried to eat them.

I’ll look in my notes. We did use black plastic and they loved it. Direct seeded. Do no remember any parthenocarpic ones though.

I may try some plastic & get them started a little earlier. I don't really think there are any parthenocarpic ones readily available - I wish. I've been switching to as much parthenocarpic stuff as I can, it's so much easier to cover everything than to fight the bugs.

The cold is coming tonight, but it won't be as bad as most of you! It's coming with some snow tonight, then it'll stay cold for the week.

Farmers market had some [Jerusalem Artichokes] here

I hope to find some tubers for planting before our farmers markets open next summer. But thanks for the suggestion.

FWIW, we are getting hit with that deep freeze right now sweeping across the nation with -16F actual temps and wind chill sitting at -29F with hardly any breeze. And looking at the radar maps, we are on the northern edge of the worst of the arctic cold blast. Nobody thinking about Farmer's Markets this time of year. In fact, we won't be leaving the house today to go outside.

That's a great thought. I live on a lake and I also have a small creek that runs through my property.
