What did you do in the garden today?

I canned all 15 1/2lbs of cucumbers! šŸ˜…
Question re tomatoes - do you have to use a canner w a thermometer? Or can you put in boiling water canner for certain time? Tomatoes and anything that doesn’t have vinegar scared me - don’t want to kill us!

Also, almost threw away bottom to old tray and discovered chicks love it!! Not spoiled at all
water bath for a set time - and some citric acid added. Easy peasy.

Used to be not so ridged here. Used to be a around a thousand people farming community and was a gravel road. Nowadays 24 thousand šŸ˜”
Ditto this area, too. Very sad, many changes, too fast. The folks moving here in droves are mostly city slickers from NY, NJ & many bring their impatient rudeness. šŸ™„ The very thing that made this area charming was the rural feel...it is disappearing, along with land, farms & common sense. Someone in planning & zoning just Has To Be in someone's back pockets, getting paid on the sly. The crap that gets approved & done just isn't right. Most things have a presentation & gives the public time to voice opinions, but some things just suddenly are set in motion, leaving ya wondering when the heck was that approved?! I guess it's called growth & progress. I call it the massacre of home town, local farm, mom & pop America.

All my pole beans died within a few days of sprouting... But the seeds I used were at least 5 yrs old. My bush beans were between 1 - 5 yrs old. Even had only a few of those actually sprout.
Seeds I purchased did that this year...that was a 1st for me. Darn Brussel sprout seeds...we were so looking forward to growing our own Brussel sprouts this year. 😢

I frequently get maggots in chicken feed bowls when they don't eat it all and it rains. I dump it out on the ground before putting new feed in. Chickens go to town on the larva... Which you'd think they'd see in the bowl but they won't bother with them unless they are on the ground...
I've noticed that...what is it about something hitting the ground or hitting the floor? Hit the ground or floor & those chickens come running! I do this when I enter their section, so they don't rush me or try to get past me as I open the door. I will grab a palm full of their own feed, which has already been sitting there available, I will toss it on the floor, & they Run to get it like it is some new special treat! Thank you for Chickens Lord, they really do make me laugh every single day! šŸ˜†

Good morning all. It has been hot, humid & very hard to breathe the past 3 days here. My neighbor said they sprayed something on the farm field 3 days ago, so whatever it was is hitting me hard. I'm running around 1st thing in the morning doing flock chores & pulling a few weeds if I can, before I leave for work. I am wheezing, coughing, turning red with hives & get terribly overheated. I need a cold shower & change of clothes before work. It is weird, I am so thirsty & hot. Well, we get rain tonight so I hope it clears the air.

In the garden I did pull some weeds before I had to go. I took a few photos.
I see some future tomatoes.

This is 1 tomato plant that grows more compact so it's by the back door. The gray tree frog visits it lol. The leaves look a bit curled, maybe it is nothing to worry about, but I added crushed egg shells to the soil. I hope it does Ok.

So, I do the pickles for 15 min in boiling water, so that and citric acid will help keep tomatoes from going bad?
Pickles and tomatoes?
Tomatoes need to process for 45 minutes. I use 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of canning salt.
