What did you do in the garden today?

Not garden related but you'll feel sorry for me šŸ˜‚ I worked at flip house without a/c all day so a hot sweaty mess! House was 83°so just like hot yoga I'm guessing. Just get my core cooled down and go to see what stupid chicken just laid! Mind you it's 105° f and I feel every bit of my 71 years old. Look for egg and b..... have laid it under raised coop, Way under.! So bring the sweet chicken lady I just wetted down their run. Yep so here I am 105°, OLD, SWEATY,cussing just a little, and I have to kneel down in smelly slimy mud, and literally SQUISH my upper half( well endowed) between the dirt and feeder trough that hangs down. !!! Army crawling on cardboard with rake to gather 2 stupid eggs! Well that gave me the incentive to get the broody cage set up and get dumb first time broody out of coop! She isedding up the flow @,laying time something fierce, for 4 weeks now!I HAVE NO ROOSTER! (which I've reminded her of 5 times at least) Dummy she's an a rock, egg shaped salt shaker, and egg shaped pink sidewalk chalk! I've even started to take a few away but she won't break. Dunked her 3 times one day
..no luck! So she'll hang in cage for a few till she no longer looks like a bearded lizard ! Fun Night !! "Chickens they'll be fun" I told myself . :bow :wee:celebrate:duc:thLol

I love the 'we don't have a rooster' argument with her.
"doesn't matter! I'll HATCH ONE! Don't think I won't!"

I had one come singing from the cattle pasture next door this week. The grass is 3 feet high and almost too dense for a chicken to get through. ALMOST.

I'm imagining a nest of 40 eggs hiding in there - and we DO have roosters. LOL

Spotted another watermelon!

And a cantaloupe!

I had to pull most of my Summer squash plants, the SVB found a way...my fault. I wasn't diligent about staking them and trimming the leaf stalks. I slit open the vines and fed the borers and squash bug nymphs to my flock. The chicks were so excited, and hightailed to a safe place to enjoy the extra protein.

Have you used that brand of lids before? And how well do they work on various brands of jars? I'm looking to find an affordable replacement for the Ball lids and replace the awful lids from a few cases of Pur jars that were gifted to me. First Street lids don't have enough of a "pop" for my taste; they're hard to tell when they actually seal. Not all lids (or jars) are made equal!
I have used Forever Jars lids. They are good quality. I can't say they're less expensive than Ball lids.

The thing keeping my imaginary nest from hatching is that we have a strict bed headcount every night. If one is missing, we find her.
If Miss March goes missing....I'm driving the cattle pasture until I find her.

Pulled one, just to see if it was ready. First time growing garlic. Do they need more time?
Also - I cut off the stem because I will be mincing and freeze drying the garlic - no need to cure.View attachment 3873650
Yes, I think so. The paper doesn't look dry at all (but that doesn't matter if you're not drying). I think they can get bigger for you.
Oh yes, the Superb brand lids. They truly are in both quality and price. My beef is with how I have to get them- some co-op drop food club thing. I have to pick them up at a specific time, at a specific parking lot and be damned my schedule or the weather. And I cannot stop the stupid emails from this company. GRRRRR.
Failure rate with Ball/Kerr/Golden Harvest (all the same company) was up to near 60% during pandemic, down to about 35% two years ago, and then I switched to superb and the generic last year. I didn't touch Pur due to their origin location and questionable lid lining. TSC no longer carries ball, only PUR. And I'm not a fan of the plastic reusable lids with the rubber bands, their long term storage failure is shocking and at the time of processing, there is no seal button to check for a true pressure seal. The superb lid is a GIANT seal indicator and you can hear that seal pop down two counties over. They're also a MUCH thicker lid, which is where Ball/Kerr/golden harvest started to go wrong.
My local Mennonite grocery carries lids in bulk BPA free, unbranded in HUGE stacks 20,50, 100,200 lids at a go for a similar price, and with the same blue tack in the lid that work just as well. I stocked up on both the generic and Superb last year and am good for a while, especially with the Freeze Dryer in the house now.
Thanks. You're reviews are the reason I went with Superb. I ordered online & was happy with the price (120 regular mouth for $37). I've used what I think are probably Superb, but without a name. Big, thick blue seals that literally THONK when they seal & have been very happy with them. I got them at Leighmans (sp) during COVID.

Temu is an evil company for sure, same as many other Chinese government controlled companies, such as Shein, Tiktok, Wechat, etc. They steal your information for Chinese government to monitor everything you do. I have heard many stories about Chinese people arrested in minutes after they criticized the government because Temu/Tiktok/Wechat reported their discussions at home to Chinese government. When I worked for GE years ago, GE gave everyone travelling to China a company phone to use so they wouldn't get these scan software in their personal phones. I personally would never do any business with these companies.
Why do you think the Chinese government would care what we do? We aren’t important people. TikTok is one thing, there’s a way influence public opinion because people are stupid, but Temu?

Thank you, Sue. I did also wash it and some of the outer layer came off. But I did think it didn't look full enough. I appreciate your advice!
