What did you do in the garden today?

Apparently I have some confused chickens...

I have a Silkie who is being broody on top of an old paintbrush.... (I refuse to give the girls any actual eggs because my flock is already too big.)

I have a Cream Legbar - Marans cross who is being broody over some old horse apples...

And I have a rooster confined to a bachelor pen who is so desperate that he's now trying to breed a leaf.

😳😂😳😂

Sprayed my brassicas with BT tonight. I've been trying to keep them alive through the summer heat so they will provide a 2nd crop in the fall... But the worms and grasshoppers are brutal. Trying to decide what to do about the grasshoppers... Maybe grab a butterfly net and try to catch them, I guess? I might have some neem oil still but it doesn't seem to help too much around here. I'd like to stay away from Sevin and other poisons.

Any other ideas?

If you or anyone you know likes to fish the fish love them. Grasshoppers is the bait my dad used when he taught me how to fish and he taught me how to put them on the hook so they wouldn't die before hitting the water. The worms are also good for fishing and the chickens love them

Out here, they're so large we just use shotguns.

That’s disappointing. I may have mentioned it before but I am totally off carrot seed tape. Out of 20 feet of tape planted only 10 to 12 carrots are developing. Also, I’ve reseeded the watermelon twice. They are finally growing.
I had no growth with spinach grow tape either.

DH loves to fish but it's so hot that no one wants to be outside.

We only made it to a non-humid 85 today, so I took full advantage and
cleaned the garage, the seed shed, the greenhouse, the gator, and put up tools, trickle charger went on the tractor, 4th of July got put away, and I cleaned the bathrooms, made a loaf of sour dough and a batch of cookies. After supper we walked 3 full acres of pasture looking for buffalo bur to pull.
I'm BEAT.

this is Buffalo bur- doesn't it look snuggly?!

Oh I hate that stuff. So hard to even find a place to grab and pull.

We've mastered it. I use a weed poke to loosen the root and DH follows me with one of those old people reacher grabber things and snaps it up and plops in in his 5 gallon bucket.

My cuckoo Marans is broody.... There are no eggs, she's what, 20 weeks old? Stupid chicken.... It's too hot to be so stupid.

This week has been one of those.... I hate most things weeks. I'm crabby and want the world to burn for no good reason. Not really, but I'm sure everyone knows the feeling.

I set gopher traps in the orchard. That's all.
