What did you do in the garden today?

@WthrLady , that buffalo bur looks like a watermelon plant. I'm happy I haven't ever had to confront it. I have enough weeds to deal with. There's one that I need to post a picture of. It has so many stickers on it that touching it causes pain. The stickers are almost invisible when they get you though. It's not a cactus or succulent but dang that nasty crap.

This week has been one of those.... I hate most things weeks. I'm crabby and want the world to burn for no good reason. Not really, but I'm sure everyone knows the feeling.
I know exactly what you mean! That was yesterday for me.

I'm hoping that getting out and doing something physical will help me feel better today. I don't mind getting dripping wet with sweat, as I'll come in, shuck off my clothes, and take a shower.

And I have a lot I could do. I need to dig the multiplier onions, as the green tops are gone, so they're done growing, like it or not. We just had over an inch of (much needed) rain, so I need to get them out of the ground so that they don't rot.

The rain also means that weeding would be much easier now. The bed where I had beans that were eaten down to nubs has been ignored (always other stuff to do) and it's just weeds now. I have to get them out before they flower/set seed.

And the pathways... oh, man. Another thing that has been pushed onto the back burner.

I need to look at today as a way to clean my pores. Drink water and sweat it back out.

My cuckoo Marans is broody.... There are no eggs, she's what, 20 weeks old? Stupid chicken.... It's too hot to be so stupid.

I set gopher traps in the orchard. That's all.
Yes, I’m in that kind of mood myself.

Did a little picking and watering. My micro tomato is doing good in this growing bag.
I can’t believe we have 1 rooster and 23 hens. Only 4 were straight run but still! He’s gonna be busy. No crowing yet. Cluck Norris
I weighed watermelon from yesterday and it’s 25 lbs 🤩

Sprayed my brassicas with BT tonight. I've been trying to keep them alive through the summer heat so they will provide a 2nd crop in the fall... But the worms and grasshoppers are brutal. Trying to decide what to do about the grasshoppers... Maybe grab a butterfly net and try to catch them, I guess? I might have some neem oil still but it doesn't seem to help too much around here. I'd like to stay away from Sevin and other poisons.

Any other ideas?
I fenced off the garden and expanded the poultry yard around the garden. So far baby rabbits and moles have been the only garden problems this year.

I have a baby rabbit in the fenced garden eating my beans, tried opening the fence 3 days now to scare it out with no luck, probably going to need to shoot it.☹️

I'd love to have chicken ninjas take out my grasshopper population, but sadly my girls are rather lazy. Why chase a grasshopper when all your luscious fruits and vegetables are just laying around for the taking... 😂. This is exactly why my garden is over 500 ft away from the chicken coop area.

This heat and humidity is getting so very old and exhausting. I did a quick garden walk this morning after tending to the chickens. The beans are all doing well and I picked my very first green bean of the season. The bushes are loading up with blossoms and baby green beans. I have a zucchini developing. The blossom is the same size as 2 male blossoms on that plant. I’m really happy to finally get some summer squash. The grapes are looking good and the pumpkin plants are growing nicely. Too hot to do much of anything again I’m trying a new bread recipe for a “quick” loaf of bread. It’s on its second rise right now and I’ll be baking in my Ninja oven. I’ll try to make sourdough bread this weekend. I have a couple of tomato plants that are big enough to support fruit so I stopped pinching the flowers off them. The San Marzano plants need to grow a bit taller before they can start producing.
