What did you do in the garden today?

My zucchini is just about to the point of producing squash. I'm glad I don't have those SVB bugs here. I'm lucky because the only pests I have deal with in the garden are earwigs and voles. And deer, but I think I finally have them locked out of my garden.

I watered the entire garden this morning then pruned more suckers from the indeterminate tomato plants. The red Russian kale is starting to bolt, which is good because I used the last of my kale seeds this spring.

I had an early morning medical appointment today then stopped at the grocery store on the way home. My sweet min pin Chloe had a seizure at 2 am that lasted awhile. Finally got back to sleep then did the clean up when I got up. When I went out to let the big chickens out to “free range” I noticed one of my butternut squash plants was in distress. Some of my San Marzano plants are looking a little peaked and I’m hoping it’s just a magnesium deficiency. I’m finally getting my much needed oral surgery done tomorrow morning so I really wanted to get the weed whacking done while I have the energy. I went over the “path” on the slope and got a lot done before the battery died. Then I tackled the front yard and got most of that cleaned up. I feel good that I got all the mowing and weed whacking done before I really won’t feel like doing it. I plan on putting some epsom salts and a little fertilizer down in the big garden before my appointment tomorrow. No rain in the forecast for over the next week. Wah! Btw: Chloe is fine, fortunately this is only her third seizure in the last 2 years. She was a street dog before being rescued. No real information on her past but she knows what plants are safe to eat. And yes, she’s an omnivore. Lol!

She is too cute! I'm glad she's ok.

@Smokerbill you have no idea how lucky you are not to have SVB! They SUCK.

Yes I am and they are! I remember the SVBs from years ago when I was in Kansas. Not fun.

Do any of you with the SVB problem spray your squash with BT? It's supposed to be effective at killing the caterpillars when they start eating the vine.

There are SVB resistant varities of winter squash too, butternut and cushaw for example.

Svb LOVE CUSHAW LOST All of mine two years running

I just cover my squash long enough that the SVBs have found the neighbors first. :gig I did vacuum up a bunch of cucumber beetles today. & some critter (lookin at u groundhog) ate all the peanut butter off the mouse traps & just tossed them about, catching no mice in the GreenStalk. :rant

So those refrigerator pickles I made were a huge hit with DHs co-workers. I made him a spicy batch & they all loved them. One even asked for the recipe. I tried them tonight & I agree, they are very good.

I'm watching Martha, she's making some type of sweet green tomatoes, like I posted yesterday with the cinnamon pickles. 🤔

I got out and watered the garden and picked my cherry tomatoes. This stinking heat is killing my garden though. My corn cannot even really get big enough to be picked. The heat is drying it out so I am probably going to just pull it out. I still have enough time to replant it which is a good thing. My beans need a cool down to start producing.
