What did you do in the garden today?

Drizzle on and off today. I’m thinking I won’t get any winter squash this year. The plants are all blooming - all male flowers. No females at all. One of the tiny watermelon plants has a melon forming. The tomatoes are all setting fruit now. I picked a handful of green beans and will have a zucchini to pick tomorrow. Out of 4 summer squash plants there’s only one producing. Wah! I’m working on the garage today and making a very small batch of pickles. I decided to just so a bread and butter style pickle of radishes, cucumber and shallots. I’ll get that done after breakfast.
My big productive zucchini plant. It’s nearly 3 feet tall.

I hadn’t ever thought about putting radishes in my pickles, I bet that’s pretty tasty and gives em a kick. Definitely going to try that.

Yes’m I’ve got one of those.

When I was a kid we lived on a farm. Our nearest neighbor would hunt for his family, and the kids went frogging a lot. Those were the first times I had frogs legs and venison. When we moved to a city I had frogs legs at a fancy restaurant, not nearly as good as those from the old days on the farm.

Yes I have my mom's copy. Great book.
I have seen cook books that are about opening store bought cans and boxes... not really cooking in my mind.. but better than McDonald's I think 😂

What happens when you don’t terminate that bind weed b4 the week of rain.
Ik what I’m doing my days off this week.
My garden is winding down.
Will focus on collecting seeds and getting rows ready for fall veggies.

I wonder if my soil is good enough to try more root veggies? 🤔

I wanted to share my adventure into yogurt making. I made my first small batch as a fun activity to do with the grandkids. I used the recipe for homemade yogurt from the Old Farmers Almanac website. I was never a fan of yogurt but I thought it would be fun. The recipe is so easy. You heat the milk then cool it a bit, whisk in 1/2 cup of unflavored greek yogurt, Wrap the pot in dish towels and put it in the oven to do its fermenting. Don’t turn the oven on. I left the pot in the oven overnight. In the morning you get this amazing creamy yogurt. The bonus is it cost half of what you would pay in the grocery store. The flavor is really good and I’m on my second batch now.

How much milk makes how much yogurt?
I was thinking about it but I would have to use store bought goat milk $5.89/32oz vs store goat yogurt$5.99/24oz.

I’ll bet that now man would survive if the stuff hit the fan and we needed those skills.

Stories like this always make me think about who would survive in a truly SHTF scenario. The armchair rambos screaming about all that’s wrong in their world, or the homeless and destitute folks that are already living it. The armchair rambos wouldn’t fare as well I bet.
The first week I wouldn’t want to be alive bc I love my ac so much. I guess I would find out what raccoons taste like 😂. The ones around here are so easy to catch bc they love cat food

Yeah, we would have to move. No way I’m living here without AC. No way.

We don’t have trash pandas in our neighborhood, but I know they’re here as they’ve been seen in our city.

AC and clean water 💕
Central heating also
a refrigerator and freezer too
I can deal with an outhouse and heating water on a stove... but I need a stove that works. Plenty of dead wood around, just need a wood burner stove set up , guess that could take care of the heating too. House not set up for that.
